第三篇Computers in Cars
You’re far from home on a lonely road.Shadowy forests stretch away on both sides.Athick mist(雾)makes it difficult to see far beyond your car’s windshield (挡风玻璃).
“Can this be route 90A?”you wonder. If it is ,you should be near a town.Yet there’s no hint of one. Night is closing in.And you’re low on gasoline.
This is a situation where an in -car computer that can navigate would be a big help.
A car computer that navigates?Yes!Such computers exist . Several experimental models are being tested by General Motors,Ford,Chrysler, and several foreign car makers. These computers vary in detail. But they all contain series of maps on videodiscs or videotapes. For example, one computer system contains 13,300 maps covering the continental US.
Before starting out on a trip,a driver can type in the code for the region he or she plans to drive through. The computer then shows a map of theat region. At the same time,a tiny radio receiver linked to the computer goes to work. It picks up signals from navigation satellites such as the NA VSTAR ing these signals, the computer shows the car’s position at all times and displays this position on the map.The computer can dalso calculate and display the best route to follow.
A navigation computer may also receive and use data about road construction, weather conditions, and traffic jams. This information would be displayed to the driver and the computer would also use the information to work out alternate(交替的)routes.
Most cars nowadays also contain computers that help cars run more efficiently. Microprocessors(微处理机)control certain engine functions by regulating the mixing
of fuel.Data on car speed, oil pressure, revolutions per minute, enginete mperature , and fuel level can be displayed as digital data (numbers) or warning lights.
Some auto designers suggest that a central computer display be used to clearly present such timely information as car speed and fuel level.Warning lights would indicate a drop in oil pressure or a sudden rise in engine temperature. To get more information on these conditions, the driver could call it up on the computer display screen. When needed, the computer could be “asked”to provide navigation aid or information about the car’s condition.
41 By describing a typical situation of a lost driver on the road, the arthor intends to
A make us believe how complex the highway computer network is.
B let us know how in-car computers are linked to road signs.
C show us how helpful a navigation computer can be.
D tell us that NA VSTAR has come into use.
42 The word “navigate”in Paragraph 3 meadns
A “help one comtrol the traffic”.
B “help one find one’s way”.
C “give a ship correct information about its course”.
D “direct a plande to its destination.”
43 The dnavigation computers have one thing in common:they all
A contain series of maps on videodisce or videotapes.
B contain 13,300 maps covering the continentalUS.
C can be obtained free of charge.
D cost a lot of money.
44 Without signals from navigation satellites, the in-car computer
A would still be able to locate the car’s position at all times.
B would fail to locate the car’s position.
C could still work out the best route to follow.
D would seek help from the radio receiver linked to it .
45 Of the following functions, which is NOT possessed by the navigation computer?
A Showing a map of the region a driver plans to drive through.
B Predicting a car crash on the road.
C Getting information about road construction, weather conditions, and traffic jams.
D Showing the car’s position at all times and displaying it on the map.。

第一篇Eta CarinaeAs possibly the galaxy’s (银河) most massive star, Eta Carinae is now engaging in some very unusual behaviour. Australian astronomers, being in the Southern Hemisphere (半球), are able to observe it clearly. In the 19th century, Eta Carinae was for a time the third brightest star in the sky. It has now become less bright so that binoculars (双筒望远镜)are ne eded to see it. “It seems to be brightening and becoming less bright over a period of many years”, said Dr Bob Duncan from the Australia Telescope National Facility. While it is not unusual for stars to vary in brightness, the period is usually much s horter. “Since 1992 it has become four times brighter, and then last year it began to drop dramatically,” he said. The problem in observing Eta Carinae is that it has been surrounded by a cloud of gas and dust, making it hard to see the star directly. However, radio waves and infrared light (红外线)can pass through this cloud, so telescopes that receive these wavelengths can observe what is occurring.Eta Carinae is of particular interest to astronomers because it seems to be in its death throes(剧痛). Being so large it will end up as a supernova (超新星). There has not been a supernova in our galaxy since the invention of the telescope. While a 1987 explosion in a nearby galaxy gave astronomers plenty of valuable data, they arehungry for an even closer look.Eta Carinae has other unique features, and is the only star known to produce an ultraviolet(紫外线)laser that is brighter than that produced by the Sun. Lasers have been observed in other frequencies from a few stars.31. Eta Carinae is now engaging inA. some very common behaviourB. some very dull behaviourC. some very frightening behaviour.D. some very strange behaviour32. The word “period” in Paragraph 3 means the length of timeA. over which star vary in brightnessB. for which Eta carinae’s brightening lasts.C. Eta carinae takes to become a supernova.D. it takes the laser from Eta carinae to travel to the earth.33. Eta Carinae is hard to observe becauseA. it is too far away.B. there is too much dust and gas around it.C. the binoculars are not powerful enough.D. it does not send out infrared light.34. Astronomers are particularly interested in Eta Carinae becauseA. it is in its final stage.B. it is a supernova.C. it exploded in 1987.D. it is brighter than the sun.35. Which of the following statements about Eta Carinae is NOT true?A. It will end up as a supernova.B. It can be seen only through binoculars.C. It is the only star that sends out an ultraviolet laser.D. Its ultraviolet laser is brighter than that of the Sun.。

Teach Your Child Science1 It is important to make your child interested in science from an early age. Most young children ask a lot of questions and you should give careful scientific answers. Don#39;t only give facts, but try to give explanations as well.2 Science is not just knowledge; it is a way of thinking,a method of finding out about the world. We see something. We try to explain it, and we test our idea by setting up an experiment. One day you come home and find the plant on the table has fallen over. You think it might be the wind from the open window or the cat, so you close the window, but leave the cat in and see what happens (you can also try leaving the window open and shutting the cat out)。

职称英语理工类C级试题Water-the Issue of This CenturyThe world is running short of fresh water. Populations are growing bigger and thirstier(渴的), with the result that freshwater is being increasingly scarce (缺乏). Half the world's wetlands have disappeared during the last century, while estimates suggest that water use will rise by 50% in the next 30 years. The World Bank report estimates that as much as half of the world's population, concentrated in Africa, the Middle East and south Asia, will face 'severe water shortages' by 2025. Local water conflicts and the loss of freshwater ecosystems appear large in some regions.A similar picture emerges from the globe's salt water regions. Three-quarters of the world's people may live within 100km of the sea in 2025, putting even more pressure on stretched coastal ecosystems. Two thirds of fisheries (渔业) are exploited at or beyond their sustainable limits, and half the world's coral reefs (珊瑚礁) may perish in 100 years. Almost 60% of coral reefs and 34% of fish species are at risk from human activities, the Bank says. The report concludes that there is ample evidence to justify immediate and coordinated action to safeguard supplies and use water more efficiently.Fresh water consumption is rising quickly, and the availability of water in some regions is likely to bee oneof the most pressing issues of the 21st century.A third of the world's population - around two billion people - live in countries that are experiencing moderateto high water shortages. That proportion could rise to half or more in the next 30 years unless institutions ()change to ensure better conservation and allocation of water.China is one country where the portents (征兆) are gloomy. The most water-stressed country in East Asia, China is exploiting 44% of its usable water, a figure projectedto rise to 60% by 2021. Primary withdrawal of water of more than 60% is widely considered by water experts to exceedthe environmental carrying capacity of a river basin system. Although China's total use appears still to be reasonable,it has several basins that are severely stressed environmentally.Withdrawals exceed environmental limits in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and will exceed them in India by 2021. In the Middle East and North Africa, only Moroo has unexploited water resources. The rest have exceeded environmentallimits and many are mining aquifers (蓄水层) - bodies of water-bearing rock - the report says.1 It is estimated that water use will rise by 50% in the next 30 years.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned2 Most developed countries will face water shortages in 20 years.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned3 Most of the world's population may live within 100km of the sea in 2025.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned。

职称英语考试理工类(C级)试题5第二篇A Thirsty WorldThe world is not only hungry,it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 75%of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97%of this huge amount is sea-water,or salt water.Man can only drink and use the other 3%-the flesh water that comes from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources. And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs(冰山)and glaciers(冰川).Even worse, some of it has been polluted. At the moment, this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us.However, our need for water is increasing rapidly.Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid a severe worldwide water shortage later on.A limited water supply would have a bad effect on agriculture and industry. In addition to stopping wasting our precious water, one useful step we should take is to develop ways of reusing it.Experiments have already been done in this field, but only on a small scale.Today,in most large cities, water is used only once and it eventually returns to the sea or runs into underground storage tanks. But it is possible to pipe water that has been used to a purifying(净化)plant. There it can be filtered(过滤)and treated with chemicals so that it can be used againjust as if it were flesh from a spring. But even if every large city purified and reused its water,we still would not have enough.Where could we turn next?To the oceans!A11 we’d have to do to make use of the vast amount ofsea-water is-remove the salt. This salt-removing process is already m use in many parts of the world. So if we take all these steps,we’ll be in no danger of drying up !36 The phrase’’the world”in the first line of the passage ref ers toA “man”.B “you”.C “woman”.D “they”.37 What percentage of the earth’s water can man actually use at present?A Nearly 75 percent.B About 97 percent.C Exactly 3 percent.D Less than 3 percent.38 According to the passage,we can avoid a worldwide water shortage in the furore byA increasing rainfall.B reusing water and utilizing sea-water.C cutting down our consumption of water.D reducing the number of factories producing steel.39 Which of the following statements, according to the passage,is NOT true?A A limited water supply will affect industrial production.B Every large city purifies and reuses its water.C Purified water is not exactly as flesh as spring water.D Oceans are the largest water source.40 According to the passage,sea-water can be tureed into flesh water byA heating it up.B treating it with chemicals.C taking salt out of it.D drying it up.。

But appearances can be deceiving: Miles within its cracked, frigid shell, Europa probably hides giant pools of liquid water. Where scientists find liquid water, they hope to find life as well.Since we can't go diving into Europa's depths just yet, scientists instead have to investigate the moon's surface for clues to what lies beneath. In a new study, scientists investigated one group of strange ice patterns on Europa and concluded that the formations mark the top of an underground pool that holds as much water as the U. S. Great Lakes.Pictures of Europa, which is slightly smaller than Earth's moon, clearly show a tangled, icy mishmash of lines and cracks known as "chaos terrains." These chaotic places cover more than half of Europa. For more than 10 years, scientists have wondered what causes the formations. The new study suggests that they arise from the mixing of vast underground stores of liquid water with icy material near the surface. For scientists who suspect that Europa also may be hiding life beneath its icy surface, the news about the new lake is exciting."It would be great if these lakes harbored life, " Britney Schmidt, a planetary scientist who worked on the study, told Science News. "But even if they didn't, they say that Europa is doing something interesting and active right now. "Schmidt, a scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, and her colleagues wanted to know how chaos terrains form. Since they couldn't rocket to Europa to see for themselves, they searched for similar formations here on Earth. They studied collapsed ice shelves in Antarctica and icy caps on volcanoes in Iceland. Those features on Earth formed when liquid water mixed with ice. The scientists now suspect something similar might be happening on Europa: that as water and ice of different temperatures mingle and shift, the surface fractures. This would explain the jumbled ice sculptures."Fracturing catastrophically disrupts the ice in the same way that it causes ice shelves tocollapse on Earth, " Schmidt told Science News. She and her team found that the process could be causing chaos terrains to form quickly on Europa. The new study suggests that on this moon, elements such as oxygen from the surface blend with the deep bodies of water. That mixture may create an environment that supports life.16. The liquid water of an underground pool of Europa is estimated to be equivalent to the water of the U. S. Great lakes.A. Right B.
