A“I miss you. Let’s meet up soon?” These are the words which appear in my inbox and outbox almost every week. I miss my friends, and they miss me. But many of them are dotted (散布于) around the country. I can’t see them as much as I’d like.I have friends living in Telford, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Some friends have moved abroad. I’ve also got some wonderful pals in London, where I live now. But, unlike many of my peers (同龄人), I don’t have one big group I can meet in one place at a time. It means a large part of my life is spent visiting my friends separately. And if I don’t do it right, it can be bloody exhausting.Don’t get me wrong. I will always make time for these visits and I never regret them. They are my friends and worth every penny and effort. But life is busy — you have friends, family, a job, a partner, and pets. Each requires their own time slots (时间档) and individual levels of attention. So I’d be a big liar if I didn’t admit I’ve striven to get the balance right over the years. To avoid what I call “long-distance friendship burnout”, I try to arrange one weekend a month to meet a friend. When it comes to playing guest or host, it’s nice to take turns.I’ve had weekends in the past where I’ve tried to arrange many friend visits in one trip. But that’s exhausting. And I didn’t feel present enough for my friends as I was thinking about what time I had to leave to see the next person, so now it’s all about one friend at a time.Obviously it means seeing them less often, but at the same time I get to spend more time with them when I do.Long-distance friendships can be tough. But they are also beautiful and 100% worth all the trouble.1. What is the author’s trouble?A. She has no friends in her city.B. She can’t get in touch with some of her friends.C. She is tired of keeping cross-national friendships.D. She has many friends living far away in different places.2. What does the underlined word “striven” in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Begged.B. Stopped.C. Decided.D. Struggled.3. What’s the advantage of the author’s new way to meet friends?A. It makes her friends miss her even more.B. It allows her to focus on one friend at a time.C. It helps save her friends a lot of travel expenses.D. It lets her discover the beauty of long-distance friendship.BMemories are stronger when the original experiences are accompanied by unpleasant smells, a team of researchers has found. The study broadens our understanding of what can drive Pavlovian responses (巴甫洛夫条件反射) and points to how negative experiences influence our ability to recall past events. “These results prove that bad smells can lead to memory improvement in both adolescents and adults,” explains Catherine Hartley, an assistant professor in New York University’s Department of Psychology (心理学) and the senior author of the paper, which appears in the journal Learning & Memory. The effect of negative experiences on memory has long been shown — and is familiar to us. For example, if you are bitten by a dog, you may develop a negative memory of the dog that bit you. Because of the painful memory surrounding the bite, you are likely to have a stronger impression of it than your other past experiences with dogs.In order to better understand how learned negative experiences influence memory during this stage of development, the researchers designed a Pavlovian learning task for individuals aged 13 to 25. The task included the viewing of a series of images belonging to one of two kinds: objects and scenes. As the study’s participants viewed the images, they wore a mask connected to a special equipment. While participants viewed images from one kind, unpleasant smells were sometimes sent through the piece of equipment to the mask; while viewing images from the other kind, air with no smell was used. This allowed the researchers to examine memory for images connected with a bad smell as well as for description of related images.A day later, researchers tested the participants, memory for the images. Their findings showed that both adolescents and adults showed better memory for images paired with the bad smell 24 hours after they saw these images. They also found that some individuals had larger responses at the point when they thought they would experience either a bad smell or clean air while viewing the image, no matter whether a smell was actually delivered. And those people were proved to have better memory. This suggests that unpredictability (不可预测性) or surprise was connected with the outcome leading to better memory.4. What has a stronger influence on our memory according to the text?A. Painful experiences.B. An easy journey.C. Warm weather.D. A lovely toy.5. What's the function of the equipment connected to the mask in the research?A. To collect data.B. To show images.C. To provide bad smells.D. To protect the participants.6. What’s the best title for the text?A. Bad smells lead to good memoriesB. Surprises improve people’s memoriesC. An important lesson on human memoriesD. The relationship between smells and memoriesCA new study has found that a daytime nap (小睡) taken once or twice a week could lower the riskof heart attacks. The study was made by researchers from the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland.Having tracked 3,462 people between the ages of 35 and 75 for over five years, the researchers made a conclusion. They found those who took occasional napping were 48% less likely to suffer a heart attack or heart failure than those who did not nap at all. Occasional naps referred to short sleep during the day, once or twice a week, for between five minutes to an hour. And no such association (因果关系) appeared for greater raping frequency or duration of naps.“Sleep patterns have previously been reported to be connected with many chronic (慢性的) diseases,” said Stephen MacMahon, an expert at Oxford University’s George Institute for Global Health, who was not involved in the study. “Some, but not all these associations will reflect the effects of underlying diseases on sleep rather than the effects of sleep patterns on health. It’s often difficult to tell which is cause and effect.”Naveed Sattar, a professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow, said the study was “somewhat interesting”. He agreed that those who napped once or twice a week had healthier or organized lifestyles, and that those who napped daily were more likely to be sick.“This means the former pattern of occasional napping is arranged on purpose and the latter pattern of regular napping possibly represents hidden illness linked to poorer lifestyle like staying up late. And unhealthy lifestyle will increase the risk of various diseases,” Sattar said.“Napping once or twice per week may reduce the risk of heart diseases, but that doesn’t mean it can really improve heart health. So, no one should take it for granted that napping is a way to keep their hearts healthy,” he added. “For now, it’s far better to aim for regular good night’s sleep and to follow the health adviser’s advice on good diets and proper physical activity levels.”7. How should we nap healthily according to this new study?A. Have a nap every other day.B. Never take a nap in daytime.C. Always nap at a fixed time every afternoon.D. Nap once or twice a week for 5 — 60 minutes each.8. What’s the relation between sleep and disease according to MacMahon?A. Hidden diseases will lead to bad sleep.B. A bad sleep habit will cause diseases.C. The two may have nothing to do with each other.D. The cause and effect relation between the two is uncertain.9. What does Sattar intend to say in Paragraphs 4 and 5?A. He fully agrees to MacMahon’s opinions.B. One’s nap pattern may reflect one’s lifestyle.C. The new study is interesting but unbelievable.D. Napping daily might decrease the risk of illness.10. What does Sattar suggest we do to keep our hearts healthy?①Learn more about research on heart health.②Take regular daytime napping seriously.③Do the right amount of exercise.④Sleep well every night.⑤Keep a healthy diet.A.①②③B.②③④C.③④⑤D.①④⑤第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Many parents are freaked out (惊慌失措) about putting their easily distracted teenagers in charge of a fast-moving chunk (大块) of glass and steel. My wife refused to teach her, leaving the task to me.I’ve learned a few things. First, Mia didn’t know how to drive at all. She didn’t even know where to put the key. It was like watching a chimpanzee try to solve a puzzle. Worse, she couldn’t remember that D was for drive, and R meant reverse (倒车).Then came the road rules. Mia likes to sail past stop signs. I had to explain that “STOP means STOP”. Had she actually read the rule book? “Yes,” she said, but she forgot most of it. “It was so boring.”Although I had been driving her around for her whole life, she hadn’t learned anything.Despite these things, I’ve also learned that I enjoy teaching her. I think I’m pretty good at it. I am much calmer than I thought I would be.I also enjoy the one-on-one time we have together. We have some good conversations. So far, we have covered her friends’ hairstyles and how stressed she feels after school. I enjoyed communicating with her.One Sunday evening, we were driving down a narrow back street, deep in conversation, when I realized that the car was moving quite fast. “SLOW DOWN!” I yelled, yanking (猛拉) the hand brake (手刹).We stopped the car and sat in the dark for a minute. “You can’t go that fast,” I said. “You don’t know enough yet.” I put my hand on her head, “I don’t want anything to happen to you.”“Me neither.” she said.“Okay, cool,” I said. “Let’s go.”she started the car and we headed back home.4. The law will go into effect by July 1, 2022.Starting school at 8:00 or 8:30 in the morning may not sound like too big of a change, but it could mean one more hour of sleep for students who used to start school at 7:30 or even earlier.“The effect of that one hour is something they will be feeling as 40-year-old adults,” Sumit Bhargava, a sleep expert at Stanford University told The New York Times. He said that not having enough sleep can affect students’ mental health and increase the risk of getting fat and diabetes (糖尿病).In the short run, students’ school performances should improve almost immediately. Kyla Wahlstrom, a researcher at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education, found that students who have enough sleep are more alert (机敏的) in class and get better grades. Some might say that urging students to go to bed earlier could have been a much easier solution than changing the school timetable across an entire state. But according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, teenagers go through biological changes when they enter puberty (青春期), which makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11: 00 pm. So when school starts at 8: 00 or earlier, they can hardly get the ideal 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep that experts suggest they need to do their best in the daytime. This is why when the new law came out, its author, Anthony Portantino, said, “Generations of children will come to appreciate (感激) this historic day and our governor for taking bold action.8. When should public high schools start classes according to the California’s new law?A. No earlier than 7:30 am.B. No earlier than 8:00 am.C. No earlier than 8:30 am.D. No earlier than 9:00 am.9. What can we learn from Bhargava’s words?A. The amount of sleep people need changes with age.B. Lack of sleep affects adults more than children.C. Sleep problems are one of the leading causes of diabetes.D. Lack of sleep could lead to health problems.10. What do we know about teenagers’ sleep patterns?A. Less sleep is needed when they enter puberty.B. Ideally, they need eight hours of sleep a night.C. They may have difficulty falling asleep before 11:00 pm.D. They often wake up at midnight due to biological changes.11.Where does this passage probably come from?A. A textbook.B. An advertisement.C. A newspaper.D. A biography.D“Severe flooding in Venice that has left much of the Italian city under water is a direct result of climate change,” the mayor says. The highest water levels in the region in more than 50 years would leave a permanent mark, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro tweeted. “Now the government must listen,” he added. “These are the effects of climate change. The cost will be high.”The waters in Venice peaked at 1.87m, according to the tide monitoring centre. Only once since official records began in 1923 has the tide been higher, reaching 1.94m in 1966. St Mark’s Square — one of the lowest parts of the city — was one of the worst hit areas. St Mark’s Basilica was flooded for the sixth time in 1,200 years, according to church records. Pierpaolo Campostrini, a member of St Mark’s council, said four of those floods had now occurred within the past 20 years. The mayor said the famous landmark had suffered grave damage. The crypt was completely flooded and there are fears of structural damage to the basilica’s columns. The city of Venice is made up of more than 100 islands inside a lagoon (濒海湖) off the north-east coast of Italy. Two people died on the island of Pellestrina, a thin strip of land that separates the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. One of them was electrocuted (触电身亡) as he tried to start a pump in his home.Mr Brugnaro said the damage was huge and that he would declare a state of disaster, warning that a project to help prevent the Venetian lagoon suffering devastating floods must be finished soon. “The situation is dramatic. We ask the government to help us,” he said on Twitter, adding that schools would remain closed until the water level subsides. He also urged local businesses to share photos and video footage of the devastation, which he said would be useful when requesting financial help from the government.12. Why was St Mark’s Square one of the worst hit areas?A.Because it lied on the coast of the sea.B.Because it was in the low-lying area in Venice.C.Because the flood first flew through this place.D.Because it was a place where it rained most heavily.13. What does the underlined word“devastating ” mean?A. Slight.B. Urgent.C. Destructive.D. Unforgettable.14. What did Mr Brugnaro do to get the government’s support?A. He would declare a state of disaster.B. He would ask the schools to remain closed.C. He made a project to prevent the lagoon suffering floods.D. He called on local businesses to share information on social media.15. What can we learn from the passage?A. Two people died from drowning.B. It is the highest water level since being recorded.C. The flood has caused basilica’s columns being damaged.D. St Mark's Basilica has been flooded four times in the past 20 years.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Facebook means never having to say goodbye. The social media web site has earned a reputation for reconnecting old friends. Last week, a guy whom I hadn't seen since my graduation party five years ago sent me a friend request. I accepted and waited for him to send me a greeting of some kind. He had sought me out, after all.I learned from his profile(简介) that he was in a relationship and had a son. However, I'm pretty sure we won’t ever write wall-to-wall, let alone e-mail each other. But he'll remain a friend of online until one of us makes a point of removing the other from his official list.My pool of friends consists of family members, college buddies, co-workers from past and present, and friends of friends. There are 35 in all. If I spent some time uploading old e-mail addresses, I'm confident that I could increase my friend count actually.A person could make a mission out of reconnecting with childhood friends, former classmates, distant cousins, and those one would like to get to know better. And some people can even handle hundreds of on-screen relationships, keeping up with the daily happenings of their small army of panions. After all, there are worse fates than having too many friends. Thanks to e-mail, the inability to schedule face-to-face meetings no longer means a friendship must e to a close. But even with e-mail, people will lose touch if one or both parties stop writing back. That's normal. People move from school to school, job to job, city to city. You never have to feel guilty for breaking away.Every day, the masterminds of Web 2. 0 find new ways of making human munication easier. However, convenience can be a crutch. People have been said to climb on roofs, solve mathematical problems, write music, walk through windows, and do murder in their sleep. In Revere, Massachusetts, a hundred policemen searched for a lost boy who left his home in his sleep and woke up five hours later on a strange sofa in a strange living room, with no idea how he had got there. At the University of Lowa, a student was reported to have the habit of getting up in the middle of the night and walking three-quarters of a mile to the Lowa River. He would take a swim and then go back to his room to bed.An American expert on sleep claims(声称) that he has never seen a sleepwalker. He is said to know more about sleep than any other living man, and during the last thirty-five years he has lost a lot of sleep watching people sleep. He says, “Of course, I know that there are sleepwalkers because I have read about them in the newspapers. But none of my sleepers ever walked, and if I were to advertise for sleepwalkers for an experiment, I doubt whether I would get many takers(应征者).”Sleepwalking, however, is a scientific reality. In 1799, he traveled with a friend to Central and South America. On their trip, Humboldt and his friend saw and did many things. They sailed down the Amazon River. They watched dolphins play in the ocean. They explored the rain forest and climbed mountains and volcanoes. They were able to make the first maps of the northern part of South America.Humboldt set a world record for mountain climbing. He also made a discovery. During his climb, Humboldt became very sick. He found out that the higher he climbed, the less oxygen there was in the air. This made it more difficult to breathe. Later, this became known as mountain sickness.Science was another part of Humboldt’s interests. He w anted to write about all of the new things he saw. He described the new plants, animals, and rocks which had never been seen by scientists before.Humboldt also studied the way of life of the local people. He learned how the native people along the Amazon River used plants in their daily lives. For example, they used a strong poison from a vine(蔓生植物) to make poisoned arrows. The natives used these arrows for hunting their food. The Amazon Indians also used a native plant to treat malaria (疟疾), a serious illness. The plant grew wild, but after it was dug up, it was never replanted. Humboldt warned the natives that the plant was in danger of dying out. He looked for ways to preserve the plant and to make it grow strong.Although Humboldt took many risks during his trip, he lived to be 90 years old. In his lifetime, he made many discoveries and shared them with the world. As a tribute (颂扬) to Humboldt, there are rivers and mountains named after him.28. The change is bound to take place, but the global warming and climate change are changing the earth’s landscape(地形) rapidly, causing panic worldwide.Experts say that the Arctic sea ice is melting (融化) quite faster than expected and it can affect not just the region, but Earth in general. A scientist even says that next year, or maybe the year after that, the Arctic will be free of ice.Peter Wadhams, a scientist, said that the melting trend led to his statement. “Most people e xpect this year will see a record low in the Arctic’s summer sea-ice cover. Next year or the year after that, I think it will be free of ice in summer and by that Imean the central Arctic will be ice-free,” Peter Wadhams, director of the Scott Polar Institute in Cambridge, said in an interview with the Gu ardian. “You will be able to cross over the North Pole by ship,” Peter Wadhams added. He strongly believes that although some pieces of ice will remain, the Arctic basin may be free of sea ice in the next two years starting in the summer of 2017.Wadhams’ study says that melting sea ice will have a great influence on the planet since the sea ice is more capable of reflecting (反射) sunlight compared to water that can only reflect 10% of the sunlight. Once the sea ice melts, the water can only reflect a small amount of sunlight. This means that the Earth will receive and absorb more sunlight, making the planet even hotter. The year 2016 has already broken records of the hottest temperature ever recorded and the trend doesn’t seem to show any decrease in global warming. “It doesn’t look like the ice is healing and growing back,” Tom Wagner, NASA’s manager for cryosphere (冰冻圈) research said in a statement.Like Wadhams, scientists and researchers all over the world are lecturing around to educate people to help lighten global warming that has already changed the planet’s landscape.32. What experts say has caused worldwide fear and great anxiety.B. The speed of the Arctic sea ice being melted is beyond expectation.C. The melting of the Arctic sea ice only has a great effect on this region.D. It’s impossible that the Arctic will be free from ice in one or two years.34. Why would the Earth become even hotter if the sea ice melted? Because_____.A. more water will cover the earth.B. there are more hours of daylight.C. the water will reflect more sunlight.D. more heat would be taken in by the earth.35. you like?If like me,you have a sweet tooth and you probably can't resist eating cakes, biscuits or chocolate and will sweeten your tea or coffee with spoonfuls of sugar-delicious!But the taste makes it very easy to ignore the warnings that too much of the white stuff(东西)is bad for our health.Consuming sugar is an addiction, the more we eat,the more we want.Today's processed food, like ready meals,is related to the stuff and many fizzy(起泡的)drinks contain seven teaspoons of sugar in just one can.In the UK,statistics show that sugar consumption is at its highest level in history and the government is trying to get the food industry to cut the amount of sugar in popular products like chocolate bars by20%by2020.Of course, sugary food tastes nice,it can help lift our mood, and a part in it can refresh us.But there are dangers too:a high-sugar diet is linked to putting on weight, and being overweight can increase the risk of getting type2diabetes(糖尿病).With these warning signs,I have considered changing my diet by replacing sugary snacks with fruit and salty biscuits-but that's boring.I am not alone.BBC journalist Radhika Shanghani, has gone one step further.Encouraged by some well-knowns and nutritionists promoting a"zero tolerance"approach to sugar, she gave it up altogether, thinking it would make her healthier.Initially she says,"My first fortnight involves mood swings.I have disturbing headaches and feel permanently hungover."These symptoms disappeared but she still found food shopping hard as she was stressing about buying the right things. Her experiment wasn't a success. She eventually sought advice from Susan Jebb, professor of diet and population health at Oxford University who said,"Lots of people enjoy sugar and gain pleasure from it,so one has to find a balance between enjoyment and eating the right amount."39.What is a person with a sweet tooth most likely to do?A.Reject sweet cakes.B.Have his coffee black.C.Add sugar to his drinks.D.Remember the side effects from eating no more sugar.CIn today's society, language plays a key role in defining gender(性别)by vocabulary, and also their non-verbal(非语言的)vocabulary.Each one of these different types of ways of communicating is obviously different between men and women. Many different studies show that men tend to talk much more than women. It has also been proven that women tend to speak faster than men;this is due to the fact that women tend to be interrupted more often than men are,and also have the ability to speak more clearly, precisely, and more quickly than men.In one study it was found that women spoke for an average of three minutes describing a painting,as opposed to the thirteen-minute average it took men to describe it.Men and women also tend to have a very different non-verbal way of communicating, which can also make it very hard for one another to understand what the opposite sex is trying to say.Men's body language is much more reserved when talking to women.Men tend not to make as much eye contact and they generally stay farther away from women when talking to them.Men avoid other people's body space while talking, and they also tend to sit back when talking. All of these have given off the impression of disinterest or boredom.Women are by far better listeners and much more enjoyable to talk with and they tend to raise more topics for conversation.Women also make it clearer whether or not the conversation is going somewhere or just stuck in neutral. After learning about our styles of communicating with each other,I have decided that although men have not quite mastered communicating, what fun would it be if we all spoke the same"language"?The little games men and women play with fun would it be if we all spoke the same"language"?The little games men and women play with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or herself after talking with someone of the opposite sex,"I wonder if there's something there?"would no longer exist.43.What does the underlined word"this"in Paragraph2refer to?A.The differences between men's and women's languages.B.The different speed of men's and women's speech.C.The ability of men's and women's spoken language.D.The non-verbal vocabulary of men and women.44.In what way do men and women differ according to the third paragraph?A.Speed of understanding.B.Understanding of speech roles.C.Politeness of communication.D.Application of body language.45.What is the author's attitude to the differences between men's and women's communication?A.Cautious.B.Favorable.C.Ambiguous.D.Skeptical.46.What is the best title for the text?A.Women, born excellent talkers.B.Men's and women's social roles.C.V ocabulary and communication.D.Opposite gender, different language.DIt's not every day that United States history mixes with microbes(微生物)in the soil. But when the grassland on the National Mall in Washington D.C.was replaced,it offered scientists the opportunity to study changes in the soil beneath. The work focused on the bacteria present in the soil.To the researchers surprise, the communities of microbes did not change a lot before and after the replacement. These communities of microbes did not change a lot before and after the replacement. These communities in the soil are known as the soil microbiome(微生物群)."My lab is interested in how microbes can move around in the environment, and how they change and adapt as a result of this movement,"explains Jo Anne Crouch, the lead author of the study."We thought that the new ‘imported’turf(草皮)from New Jersey would introduce different communities of bacteria to the National Mall.
