cancers. This is based on a study involving about 900, 000 people, spanning many years. The study, started in 1992 by the American Cancer Society, included men and women from all 50 states. The youngest participants were 30 years old, and the average age was 57. By December 2008, 24% of the participants had died, just a quarter of them from cancers. In analyzing the results, researchers attempted to take account of such potential factors as smoking, drinking alcohol, taking aspirin and a wide variety of other factors that might otherwise affect the results. The results are clear: the more you weigh, the greater your risk of dying of cancer will be (up to 52% higher for men and 62% for women). In men as well as women, the only cancers that did not have a strong connection with weight were lung cancer and brain cancer. For women, the strongest correlation with weight was uterine cancer (子宫癌), which is 6.5 times higher for women with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or more. For men, it was liver cancer, which is 4.5 times higher in most obese (肥胖的) men. Smokers tend to be more successful in keeping weight off than nonsmokers, slightly reducing the risk. But many of them don’t have good lungs. Thus, in another way, they also face risks. As for why extra weight leads to excess cancer death rate, there’s no clear agreement. But the decrease in vitamin D in obese people seems a likely factor. Vitamin D is known to have a role in preventing cancer. Also, there is a simple fact that obesity makes the management of cancer more difficult. Although for now there is no simple answer to why obesity increases a person’s cancer risk, all we know for certain is that the risk is real. 1.The passage is mainly concerned with the relationship between________. A.diet and cancer B.body weight and cancer C.sex and cancer D.smoking and cancer 2.The author develops the passage mainly through________. A.time order B.space order C.analysis and comparison D.figures and examples 3.The underlined word “spanning” in the first paragraph probably means“________”.

Module2 Highlights of My Senior YearⅠ.阅读理解阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

ANew Zealand has long been mountain bike m ad.Over the last 25 years an increasing number of dedicated (专用的) cycle tracks and parks have sprung up in both town and country, many developed by bike clubs and other community groups.Recreational cycling was already on a roll, when in 2009 a 50 million New Zealand dollar government fund was established to create a continuous touring route running the length of the country, supported at a grass roots level by an additional 50 million New Zealand dollars offered up by councils and local organizations. It soon became apparent, however, that building one continuous route across the two islands was not only too ambitious, but it also would bypass many of the most remote and interesting corners of the country. Restoring and extending historic pathways made more sense, enabling cyclists to visit fascinating historic and cultural sites while seeing natural wonders along the way,and inspiring both locals and people from overseas to ride them. The first sod(草皮) of the new trails was turned by Prime Minister John Key in late 2009.Since then, armed with machetes, shovels and diggers, some of the world's best single-track designers and builders have bushbashed, benched, sidled and switch -backed their way through a diverse range of terrain(地形).By the end of 2012,10 of the 20 trails were open to riders, with the remainder scheduled for completion by the end of 2013.The 2,340 km network will be even further extended by already-established trails, such as the famous 71 km Queen Charlotte Track that goes through the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island. 1.Restoring and extending historic pathways would________.A.work natural wonders along the historic pathwaysB.allow cyclists to enjoy local history and cultureC.discourage locals and foreigners from riding themD.avoid all remote and interesting corners of the country解析:选B。

I put up $ 60of my grass cutting and snow shoveling money, and my dad put up theother half. I would pay him back in installments (分期地) over thenext six months. Although it was the kind of bike you’d expect apriest to have (dull silver, slightly worn, no baseball cards inthe spokes), it was my ticket to the adult world. For her family of seven kids, my mom developed a system in which she decorated the outside of seven large boxes with different types of wallpaper. We each had our own box that contained six or so presents, and we’d close our eyes and reach in to grab one when it was our turn.We opened one present at a time so everyone could “appreciate” each other’s gifts. My dad, a master showman, liked to keep a few of Santa’s better presents for the end. On that Christmas morning, he gave me a used portable record player, which was the “family stereo” that all of us fought over!Alas, my happiness was shortlived after my dad called my sister to the kitchen. “We have one more gift for you,” he said as he opened the door that led to the garage. There, on the steps, stood a brand new tenspeed Schwinn. I could hear her screams of joy.I slumped ont o the floor. My tenspeed chariot had turned into a pumpkin in the time it took my sister to get on the gleaming (闪烁的) leather seat. After a few weeks of watching me pout(撅嘴), my dad finally pulled me aside. “Everything okay?”“I t’s not fair,” I whined. “I worked so hard for my bike, and it’s not even new. Then Liz gets a brand new bike as soon as I make the final payment. She didn’t have to do anything for it. ”My dad smiled. “She didn’t have to do anything f or it because it’s not really for her,” he said, and then left the room. What did that mean? She’d been on it every day since Christmas —no way they’d let me take it back now. By spring Liz and I were riding all over town together now that she could keep up.As we grew, Liz and I became true friends. We biked down to swim at the localpool, and then put in seven miles to take the free town tennis lessons together. We ended up at the same college, and even graduated the same year.Still, I wasn’t smart enough to figure out what my dad meant until years later. That brand new bike was not a gift for Liz — it was a gift for me. He’d given me the gift of my sister’s company, the ability to stay together rather than drift apart. The idea is to build a computerized collection of information detailing the daily travel of millions of Americans.Detective Mohammed Tabibi uses a license plate reader, also known as a LPR to look for stolen v ehicles. “It has somewhat paid. We have caught some people involved in some serious crimes because of the LPR,” said Tabibi. The use of LPRs is growing across the United States. Some are fixed to polesalong roadsides, others are placed in lawenforcement vehicles. Pr ivacy groups are concerned about the growing use of these devices. Jay Stanley is with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). “What they are also doing is storing everybody’s time, place, and location. And many police departments are holding that information indefinitely. You know in our society, the government doesn’t follow you and invade your privacy and track you unless it has a specific reason that you are i nvolved in wrongdoing,” said Stanley.Kevin Rearden served as Captain of the Arlington county Police, who also headed the county’s Homeland Security Department before he retired. He said county policy called for the LPR informat ion to be kept for six months. “We originally had a twomonth period, and the detectives requested the chief extend it to six months because they found in so many investigations, keeping it for two months wasn’t long enough,” said Rearden, “but other law enforcement agencies that use the information may store it for unlimited periods of time.”Su pporters of privacy rights say they have no problem with police departments taking pictures of license plates to investigate crimes. But Jay Stanley says they’re against storing the information for long periods of time. However, Captain Rearden disagrees,“They keep saying the word ’tracking’.I would be lucky if I could find you in a few places in Arlington at a particular time.
