Natural changes in the climate are probably to blame for theunusual weather conditions in many parts of the world.(3)要学会从第一句来预测整段的思路和意向,因为文章的首句通常是topic sentence.
I should also like to take this opportunity to thank the countless volunteers from so many nations, who rushed to Japan to help with the relief and recon struction efforts after the earthquake in 1995.#建议大家平时在联系听力的时候,多听一些英文长句子,长度可以逐渐加长。
11. Thank you, Mr. deputy mayor, for your warm remarks. Now I should like t o offer a few of my own on behalf of the Johnson Corporation.//谢副市热话I say 代Johnson cor.2. I want to assure you that we will do our best to develop a long term coop eration with the banks, corporations and enterprises in Shanghai.//I 保we 尽力↗长合→bank. Cor. Ent. In SH3. The Johnson Corporation is a capital-based lending corporation. We ma inly offer loans to developing countries and have business relations with many countries in the world.//Johns. Cor $ 基,we 贷→发中□&bus tie □世4. This year, we will lower borrowing rates and improve efficiency in order to further enhance business relations with developing countries, especially with o ur partners in shanghai. 伙in SH例21.
Toast Speeches--0801

0801 Toast Speeches Lesson One p78 p55The U.S. Minister Counselor’s Toast Speech at the “Sino-US Environment Protection Symposium”Thank you, Mr. … Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is my first visit to China’s Northeast in over ten yearsand I am grateful this symposium has provided me the opportunity to meet so many distinguished guests who are concerned with the environment and business in Shenyang.I greatly appreciated the cooperation of the Liaoning Government in co-sponsoring this important symposium with the U.S. Information Service(of the U.S. Consulate General). This is the fifth year the USIS has organized an Economic Development Symposium in China, but it is the first we have done so in the northeast.Based on what I have observed during this first day of the symposium, Ithink I can safely say we will have even closer cooperation in the future. It’s also the first year that the Economic Development Symposium has focused on the environment as an area concern in the economy. In the U.S., Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has made international environmental cooperation a principal element of U.S. foreign policy.Just last month, in conjunction with Earth Day ’97, the Secretary issued the first of what will be an annual report on what we are calling “Environment Diplomacy”.During her meetings last week with Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen, our mutual efforts on environmental protection were prominent on the agenda. As a world’s two biggest producers of toxic emissions, which result in global warming, the U.S. and China have a special responsibility to act together to reduce these threats to our environment. You here in the Northeast have taken this responsibility seriouslyand have demonstrated a sincere desire to cooperate in environmentalcleanup. As a heavy industry hub of China, Shenyang has already taken significant steps to protect the environment. These steps include putting anti-pollution facilities into operation, cleaning up the Southern Canal, increasing the forest coverage, and instilling the concept of environmental protection among city residents. These measures are contributing a great deal to the improvement of Shenyang’s environment. But as a heavy industry city, Shenyang will inevitably want to continue and increase its vigilance towards safeguarding the environment as the level of its economic and industrial activity increases. This will help the city avoid the serious problems which unchecked industrial development can create; namely, contaminated air and polluted water. We in the United States have been fighting these same problems for decades.Because of this long experience, we co-sponsor this symposium in the hopes by sharing we have learned and transferring technologies we have developed,we can realize our mutual desire to leave a clear sky, clean rivers and plenty of natural resources for future generations. This symposium provides a valuable opportunity for Chinese and American companies to work side by side against pollution. We have made a good start together in today’s discussions.I promise that we toast our growing cooperation tomorrow and in the future.。

比如说像“negotiation(谈判)”,这个词在商务场合超级常见。
还有“contract(合同)”,这可是商务活动的重要依据。
像“Nice to meet you. How are you today?”
还有更正式一点的,“It's a great honor to have this opportunity to meet with you.”
如果听力原文里有一个比较复杂的句子,比如说“Our company is considering a strategic partnership with your firm to jointly explore the emerging market in Southeast Asia.”

Sample test one. Part A. Spot dictation. Directions. In this part of the test you will hear a passage and read the same passage with blanks in it. Fill in each of the blanks with the words you have heard on the tape. Write your answer in the corresponding space in your answer booklet. Remember you will hear the passage only once. The parents set the rules and the children obey. Right? Wrong? In a growing number of North American families adults have let their children take over. Parents want to be nurturing a love and make their small children happy. But many have become confused about the best way to achieve this, explains a noted child psychologist. Large number of parents are being controlled by their children to the point that the entire families end up organizing themselves around a small child’s emotions. The problem is that many mothers and fathers try to be a friend to their children. However parenting is not a popularity contest. Challenging authority is a normal part of child development, and the strongest between the ages of 4 and 6. Setting rules and enforcing them teaches the child that he or she is equal in worth but not equal in authority. Then the child feel sage and secure and can be a kid again. Believe it or not, it’s frightening for childr en to realize they are in charge of a situation. Inup-side-down families when parents back down from rules they set, children become very insecure, anxious, and out of control. They don’t trust their parents to protect them. Parents should follow these tips to avoid the situation and keep control. Be a leader. Parents cannot guide a child and seek his or her approval of their decisions at the same time. Don’t say it’s time for bed. OK? Instead say it’s time for bed kids. Don’t make rules quickly and then c hange them. It’s very important to be consistent. Once you make a rule stick to it. Pay less attention to your children when their behavior is bad, and more when it is good. Do not reward bad behavior by giving extra attention to it. Instead save your attention for when the child acts appropriately. Don’t allow your kids to call you by your first name. This removes the authority figure in a child’s life. Children need parents not another friend.Part B. Listening comprehension.1. Statements. Directions. In this part of the test you will hear several short statements. These statements will be spoken only once, and you will not find them written on the paper. So you must listen carefully. When you hear a statement read the answer choices and decide which one is closest in meaning to the statement you have heard. Then write the letter of theanswer you have chosen in the corresponding space in your answer booklet. The supermarkets outside the city are so much cheaper than the one by the school.2) I got lost on my waited hotel in Boston last Sunday morning. I don’t know how I did it. I have been there a million times.3) Professor Avril sure was acting strangely in his morning class. He was talking so quietly and then not giving us any home work.4) I am sorry sir. But you are allowed only one piece of luggage on the plane. You will have to check one of the suit cases at the luggage counter.5) You wer en’t in class this morning. So you probably haven’t heard that the deadline has been extended a week.6) Are you going to the store? Well, I am low on laundry detergent, I forgot to buy some when I was at the supermarket yesterday afternoon.7) I just ca lled the travel agent. It’s all set. In the first week of next month, I am heading for the beach for an entire week.8) I worked very hard on my research paper. But the professor said that I made many broad claims that won’t support it enough.9) You say you really like those abstract paintings we saw in our art history class today, but I guess it’s something I haven’t acquired a taste for yet.10) You will be staying at the Hilton, right across the street from the conference center. But I am at the Royal Hotel 6 miles away. Third edition.Sample test one.Part B. Listening comprehension. 2. Talks and conversations. I had never lived away from my parents before. And I was really looking forward to it. But I was also scared because I was leaving my friends behind. And I didn’t know anyone when I first arrived. I lived in a really big dormitory and shared a room with 2 other girls. I guess the thing I learn the most was how to get long with others. You know how to respect other peo ple’s opinions and properties, stuff like that. At home I don’t always have my own room. This was the first time I’d have to live with other people in the same room. We were all really different. I mean our personalities and life styles were completely opposite in some ways. Anyway, at first it really caused problems, but we learned how to get along living in those tight cordors, three 17 years olds live in one room. Can you imagine? I am surprised we survived at all.M: I think for myself. The hardest thing was learning how to manage my own time better. I used to stay up late watching TV a lot, didn’t eat well, often went to class unprepared, and things like that. My grades were really suffering, and I could hardly keep my eyes open in class. It was a drag. Somehow, midway through the semester, I changed and started to do well. Organizing my time was a real challenge. In high school I didn’t have to worry. I had the same schedule everyday. And at night my parents were pushing me to study. But it’s different when you go away to college. You have to learn to take responsibility for your actions. No one is going to tell you what to do. You have to figure it out for yourself.Questions:15) How old was the woman when she went away to college?16) Why did she feel scared when she first arrived at the college?17) The women mentions that she learned several things at college, which of the following is not one of these things?18) Which was the most difficult thing for the man when he went away to college?19) Which of the following statements is not true as to his performance when he first arrived at college?20) When did he change and start to improve?21) According to the man what’s the thing you have to learn when you go away to college? Questions 22 to 26 are based on the following conversation.M: I just found out that my parents are moving.W: Mm, are you surprised?M: Well, not really. They’ve been trying to sell their house for 6 months to a year now.W: Oh, well, I thought they liked where they were.M: They do. They love it. But they are getting older. Dad wants to live in a smaller town. And mom says she is sick and tired of the fast pace and taking care of the house, you know.W: Mm. So where are they going to move?M: I can not believe this.W: What?M: They are going to Mexico. Can you believe it?W: Oh, my Gosh. You are kidding.M: Nope. They are going to San Miguel De Olanda. It’s a gorgeous little town in mountains. W: Wow, I have never heard of it.M: It’s about 115 miles northwe st of Mexico city.W: Wow, do your parents speak Spanish?M: No, but they are going to learn.W: Wow, that is a big change. Why don’t they stay in the US?M: Well, they always want to live abroad. Now that they are retired they finally get to do it. And my dad, he adores Mexico. He has been there 6 or 7 times at least.W: Wow, sounds like this is going to be quite an adventure.M: It should be. In San Miguel it is stunning. The government has made sure that there are no new buildings ever built there. So that the traditional feeling of the town. Wow, it’s been preserved. Oh, and they made pottery there, which is perfect for my mother, because she collects the stuff.W: Oh, that’s great for her. So I guess now you are going to have a place to stay in M exico. M: Yeah.W: And a place for your friends to come and visit in Mexico.M: Well, if my friends are nice to me, I suppose something could be arranged. Did you have anybody in particular in mind?W: Oh, very funny. So when exactly are they moving?M: In a couple of months. They have to pack up and take care of all the business here. I am going to help them with the move. I may even try to stay a couple of months if I can swing the time.Questions:22) Why is the man not really surprised at his par ents’ moving?23) The man mentions several reasons to explain why his parents are moving, which of the following is not one of the reasons?24) Where his parents planning to move?25) According to the conversation which of the following statement is not true?26) When exactly are they moving?Questions 27 to 30 are based on the following talk.OK. Let’s talk a little bit today about Steve Jobs, founder of Apple Computer. Jobs, a college drop out, a drop out who then goes on to start a revolutionary computer company, that changed the way the world perceive the computer and its role in society. Steve jobs believed, I should say strongly believed that the computer should and would become a tool for the everyday person. In his own words, he says, quote, we started it out to get a computer in the hands of everyday people. And we succeeded beyond the wildest dreams. And succeed he did, in 1977 the world’s first mass marketed personal computer, the apple two, came out. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands were sold. Other companies sprang up. And by 1985 there were 38 million computers in the world. In the year 2000, that number climbed to 557 million. In millions of homes across the globe, we communicate by computer, we play games, we get and give information, we shop, we work, we organize our personal finances, all done on a personal everyday home computer. Now behind Jobs’ belief that the computer should made available to the everyday person, was a true underlined belief in technology, that technology could be used to better our lives. The seventies saw real revolution in technology, but people like Steve Jobs were motivated by more than just the need to be involved in the technological revolution. He wanted to shape it. Jobs believed that it’s important to comb ine technology and art to be creative. With this kind of thinking it’s not too surprising to see why the macintosh has become a favorite among artists, graphic designers, professionals in the publishing and video and animation industries. Jobs says, quote, the macintosh turned out so well because the people working on it were musicians, artists, poets, and historians, who also happen to be excellent computer scientists. So Jobs believed in technology. He believed it could be made available to everyone, and he believed that it could be used as a tool for creativity. He was certainly a pioneer.Questions:27) Which of the following statements is not true about Steve Jobs?28) In which year was the first mass marketed personal computer produced?29) How many computers were there in the world in the year of 2000?30) What was Steve Jobs true underlined belief?Part C. Listening and translation.1. Sentence translation. Directions: Listen and translate each sentence you have heard into Chinese. Then write it in the space given below.1) It’s very difficult to quit smoking, which is why it is better not to start smoking in the first place. Doctors often say smoking kills.2) Most of the people I know are interested in the proposed tax reform being debated in the congress. Because they hope it will lower taxes for them.3) If more companies provide child’s care facilities at work, they will really help mothers who had to work outside of their homes.4) You shouldn’t be worried about making new friends. It w ill happen gradually. By this time next year I am sure you will have made many new friends5) There are more high school drop outs than before. Thus there are more unqualified young people looking for jobs than there used to be.2. Passage translation. Directions: Listen and translate each passage you have heard intoChinese. Then write it in the space given below. You may take notes while you are listening.1) You know the one issue that I feel the strongest about is the environment. Well, maybe it’sa little bit expensive to change our ways, but we have to try. We need to take care of the world we live in. So I think we can all do small things like recycle plastics and be careful not to waste water and electricity. You know what they say. We only have one world so we shouldn’t mess it up.2) For me freedom speech is very important. We should always be allowed to say what we believe, especially now. You know that people want to send to the internet, they want to limit what we have access to our computers. Well, I don’t agree with that at all. Of course I know it’s a tricky question, where do you draw the line on what should be controlled? What limit should be placed on our freedom of speech? I suppose there have to be some limits set, but I say the fewer the better. Maybe the best thing is just set aside everything on a case by case bases.。

And although it was very expensive, it quickly became popular. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today. The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people died from hunger when the crop failed during the "Potato Famine" of 1845-1846.There are many other foods that have travelled from South America to the Old World. It is run by either mechanical or electronic means. These machines can do a great deal of complicated work in a very short time. A large computer, for example, can add or subtract nine thousand times a second, multiply a thousand times a second, or divide five hundred times a second. Its percentage of error is about one in a billion digits. It has been estimated that human beings making calculations average about one mistake per two hundred digits. The heart of an electronic computer lies in its vacuum tubes, or transistors. Its electronic circuits work a thousand times faster than the nerve cells in the human brain. A problem that might take a human being two years to solve can be solved by a computer in one minute, but in order to do properly, a computer must be given instruction it must be programmed.Computers can be designed for many specialized purposes—they can be used to prepare payrolls, guide airplane flights, direct traffic, even to play chess.
Unit 3. Part one. Crime and punishment.2. Exercises. 1. Listen to someone talking about prison and then answer the following questions.About 7 out of 10 people released from prison end up in prison again sooner or later. A lot of people think this simply indicates that once a person becomes a criminal he will probably remain a criminal. But of course it doesn’t necessarily mean that at al l. On the contrary it could equally suggest that being in prison actually makes people more likely to commit crimes. After all prisons are full of criminals, and this means that someone going to prison for the first time is going to meet a lot more crimina ls than he’s met before, so he will probably learn a lot about crime during his stay there. The fact that so many people get rearrested also suggests that prisons aren’t doing enough to train people for jobs they can do when they get out. If they were given this training ex-prisoners wouldn’t need to turn to crime again to make a living.2. Listen again and then supply the missing information in the following passage.Part 2. Listen to the following conversation and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.W: Andr ew, I know you’ve been the victim of the crime.M: Well, actually I was robbed several times. The worst time was when my apartment was burglarized. I got home, and saw the lock of my door had been broken, and the apartment was ran sect.W: What was taken?M: They took my camera, my stereo, my paper work, I lost irreplaceable personal items. W: Were you scared?M: No, I was angry. And I felt helpless. Because I knew I could never find out what really happened. And I knew I would never get my stuff back. It’s like a feeling of violation when you know that someone has broken into your private space and taken your things. I called the police so that I could have a record of what was stolen for tax purposes. But they never caught the thief.W: And that wasn’t the first time you are robbed?M: No, I have had things taken by pick pockets. Once someone took my wallet on the subway. And there was a letter from my girl friend in that I’d like to carry arround with me. Not really important I suppose, but it had symbolic value. And when something like that happens you lose a part of your past. That time I felt angry at myself, because they always tell you not to put your wallet in your back pocket.Questions:1) What was Andrew’s worst experience of a crime?2) Andrew mentions several things that had been stolen in that case. Which of the following is not one of these things?3) How did Andrew feel after what it happened to him?4) Why did Andrew report the theft to the police?5) Which of the following statements is true about his having had things taken by pick pockets?2. How to stay safe in the city? Listen to the following passage about how to prevent crimes and then choose the correct answer to each question you hear.Yes. So we in the police force had to have a lot of problems which could easily be avoided bytaking a minimum of care and using a bit of common sense. The kind of things I am talking about are muggings, assaults, robberies, and in some cases rape. Now I know you are all young and you want to enjoy yourselves. That’s OK. I don’t want to spoil your fun. So I have tried to tell you how to avoid putting yourselves and your property at risk. For all the girls here if you are in a bar or disco that make very sure that your handbag or purse is where you can keep an eye on it, not on the floor or on another chair. If you want to dance, ask friend to take care of it or take it with you. For the gentlemen, don’t walk around with your wallet stuck in a back pocket of your trousers. It’s easy meet for a pick pocket, believe me. If you are driving, park in a public car park, or at least in a well lit area if it’s at night. Thieves love to find a car in a quiet dark road. As you are all foreigners here, don’t carry a lot of cash with you. And the same goes for passports, identity cards, and other important documents. For your own personal security, it is always better to go home by bus or taxi if it’s late. If you have to walk home late at nigh, go with some friends. If you are alone, stick to well lit areas. Should you see a group of people looking for trouble, cross over the road and if you really think someone is going to bother you, bang on the door of the nearest house and ask for help. Oh, another word of warning, don’t hitch lifts. It’s asking for tro uble. If a car stops to ask for information, just keep well clear of the door so you can see what the people want. This isn’t a dangerous town if you are sensible. To close, I just want to say that in this country it is illegal to carry a knife, spray, or anything that can be used as a weapon, even if it is for self-defense. And she had shortish hair. I think she had a fringe but untidy.M: Did you notice the clothing at all?W: She had a white collar, open neck shirt, I think, over blouse or what look like a velvet jac ket. But I can’t remember the color. I think it was a green or a brown, but it was some dark color.M: OK. Well, let’s go to the man of what you saw. If you could just describe it to me, because there wasn’t much on the report that you left with the serge ant.W: Yes, well, I noticed he was wearing a funny kind of woolen jacket.M: A balky sort of jacket, was it? Thick or …W: Well, yes, not really very balky. It looked as if it was neated, and had a sort of woolen color. And I think he was wearing an open neck shirt too. He was younger than her. I should think he was in his early 20s.M: And she looked older.W: She looked a bit older to me. And he had his hair brush back.M: Yes. Anything about the shirt that you noticed. Was it just a plain white shirt or was it any other sort?W: I think it was striped, but I can’t be perfectly sure. But I do remember his hair was sort of wavy and brushed back in shortish.M: OK. Unit 11. Part one. A man’s castle. 2. Exercises.1. Listen to the passage about the London Stock Exchange. And then decide whether the following statements are true(T) or false(F).The London Stock Exchange is always being famous as a place for men only and women used to be strictly forbidden to enter. But the world is changing day by day and even the stock exchange which seems to be a men’s castle is gradually opening its door to th e other sex. On the November 16, 1971, a great decision was taken. The Stock Exchange Council decided that women should be allowed onto the new trading floor when it opened in 1973. But the castle had not been completely conquered. The first goals to work in the stock exchange were not brokers or jobbers. They were neither allowed to become partners in stock broking firms nor to be authorized dealers in stocks and shares. They were simply junior clerks and telephone operators. Women have been trying to get into the stock exchange for many years. Several votes have been taken in the stock exchange to see whether the members would be willing to allow women to become members, but the answer has always been no. There have been 3 refusals of this kind since 1967. Now women are admitted although in a very junior capacity. Two firms of jobbers made an application to the stock exchange council to be allowed to employ girl clerks. The mission was finally given. A member of the stock exchange explained after this news have been given, “The new floor is going to be different from the old one”. All the jobbers will have their own stand with space for a telephone and typewriters. Therefore there have to be typists and telephone operators. So women must be allowed in. This decision did not mean a very great victory in the war for equal rights for women, however, it was a step in the right direction. The chairman of the stock exchange said, I think that the opening of the new building will eventually lead to women being allowed to have full membership of the stock exchange. It is only a matter of time. It must happen.2. Listen again and then supply the missing information in the following passage.Part 2. Statements. 2. Exercises. If the learning of a new language begins before lower adolescence, one is likely to be able to speak such a language with complete naturalness, but if learned after upper adolescence some hangover of a mother-tongue feature is very likely to persist. But not only do languages exhibit such learning patterns, but so do cultural traits, for example, shaking hands, kissing, and embracing.Although many persons assume that languages exist in dictionaries and grammars, in fact they only exist in people’s heads. But this is equally true of cultural traits, which indicate clearly a they only exist in people’s heads. But this is equally true of cultural traits, which indicate clearly a person’s value system when crucial decisions need to be made before there is any time to think about alternatives, for example, diving into a flooding stream to rescue a drowning child.。
