In the fairly tale of Cinderella, the prince chooses the poor girl instead of the beautiful girls, because he admires Cinderella’s inner beauty, though she is nobody. Though it is just a story, it tells people that inner beauty makes one outstanding. People can make their faces perfect, but there is no way to fulfill their inner beauty by technology.

Are people unique? It is human beings’ pride that we are the only species on the Planet that can speak and think. However, recent research casts doubt on that common belief.Zuberbuhler, a psychologist at St. Andrews University, and his colleagues recorded thousands of calls made by Diana monkeys and noticed that the monkeys adapted their calls to change the meaning to warn one another about different situations. For example, they made a ‘krack’ alarm call at the sight of tiger. However, when they merely repeated calls made by other monkeys they added an ‘oo’.The researchers found that the same calls would be recognised by other species, like Campbell’s monkeys. So they are communicating across species. ‘And since then we have found that hornbill birds can understand these calls and they too can understand all the different meanings’, said Zuberbuhler. What is also surprising is that signs of intelligence have been found in birds, whose small brains were long assumed to be a complete barrier to intelligence. However, all that is changing fast. A few years ago Irene Pepperberg of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology taught a parrot to recognise and count up to six objects, which couldn’t have been achieved if birds were unable to memorize.Last year, that was topped by Alex Kacelnik, a professor of behavioral ecology at Oxford, who discovered that crows (乌鸦) are capable of using tools in complex orders, the first time such behaviour has been observed in non-humans. In an experiment seven crows successfully grabbed a piece of food placed out of reach using three different lengths of stick. Crucially, they were able to complete the task without any special training, suggesting the birds were capable of a level of abstract reasoning normally associated only with humans. All this is powerful evidence against the idea that people are unique. Scientists have discovered signs of language and intelligence in monkeys and birds. Some monkeys can communicate various messages with different calls in and across species. Some birds, like parrots and crows, have the ability to memorize and reason. So language and intelligence are not unique to humans.2020年春考Global CooperationIn the 21st century, we’ve seen a new trend that is pushing the boundaries (边界) of human invention and innovation —global cooperation. Scientific and technical research and development is now so complicated that no one scientist can know it all. So, increasingly, innovation is coming from the combining of cutting-edge expertise (专业知识) from different scientific fields. There are now over 8,000 scientific journals worldwide and it is impossible to be an expert in all areas. Therefore, in this highly specialized world, scientists, medics and engineers have to cooperate in order to innovate. Professor Bob Langer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has made significant breakthroughs in the field of biomedical engineering. But he hasn’t done it on his own. He has invited experts from around the world in different fields to form a global team to design new substances which can go inside the body, deliver medicines and then dissolve. Also at MIT, when Cesar Harada heard about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, he quit his dream job there and tried to develop a more efficient way to remove the oil. But rather than focusing on profit, he decided to ‘open-source’ the design. He shared his own ideas on the web for free and then got experts from all around the world to contribute ideas and even donations. Thanks to this free, not-for-profit way of sharing ideas and intellectual property on the internet, a boat capable of cleaning oil quickly came into being. Obviously, international cooperation based on sharing information freely has produced innovative approaches to solving problems. It appears that the days of brilliant individuals working in their garages on their own are over. Global teams with a united purpose building on everyone’s expertise can collectively do far more than one brilliant individual. Today’s world calls for global cooperators, sharers, and not protectors of ideas. In this century, global cooperation in science and technology is desirable because no single scientist can be a know-all due to the complexity of research and development. Scientists are working together to make breakthroughs. They also manage to solve problems by sharing ideas information freely. Gone are the days when one expert can make it alone.2019年秋考Directions:Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Being among the first to try out a new piece of technology is cool. When you’re the only member of your social circle with the latest hot device, people stare in fascination. However, people tend to underestimate the costs of this temporary coolness, which they pay in more ways than one.Frankly speaking, early adoption is a bad investment. The earliest versions of devices are not only expensive, they are also the most expensive that those devices will ever be. Companies are attempting to recover the cost of production as fast as they can, and once the profits from early adopters’ purchases are safely in their hands, they can cut the price and shift to the next marketing phase: selling the product to everyone else. This is why the cost of the original iPhone dropped about $200 only eight months after its release. Those who are first to leap into a new technology also risk wasting money and time on something that will never catch on. In 2006, HD DVDs, a new format(制式)for video, entered the market. A few eager consumers bought HD DVD players that were discontinued in early 2008. The early adopters were then stuck with priceydevices that just sat on their shelves collecting dust.Another good reason to resist the early adoption temptation is that the first version of a product typically has imperfections. For example, when Microsoft’s game machine, Xbox One, was first released in 2013, users immediately began to complain of problems. Devoted gamers worked to find and share solutions to these issues. Such problems are so common with new technology that early adopters are basically unpaid testers. So don’t join the first wave of consumers who invest in the latest version of device; instead, wait and see. It is unwise to be early users of the latest devices. Firstly, the devices, when launched, are often overpriced because companies want to get back the cost quickly. Secondly, what you have bought can be out of date very soon. Finally, the devices are very likely imperfect. Therefore, don’t be early adopters.2019年春考Directions:Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Where are the bees?Bees are essential to the production of food we eat. Bees make honey, but they also pollinate(给...授花粉)large areas of crops, such as strawberries, apples and onions. About a third of the food we eat is a result of pollination of the bees. Unfortunately, bees have been disappearing at an alarming rate.In 2006, beekeepers started reporting about something called Colony Collapse Disaster (CCD). The main sign of CCD is the loss of adult honey bees from a hive(蜂巢). In October of 2006, some beekeepers reported that they had lost between 30 and 90 percent of their hives. There were many theories of the disappearance of the bees. But the most convincing one has to do with pesticides(杀虫剂)and lifestyles of bees today. Nowadays, beekeepers get most of their income not from producing honey but from renting bees to pollinate plants. This means that the life of the typical bee now consists of traveling all around the country to pollinate crops as the seasons change. That means a lot of traveling on trucks, which is very stressful to bees. It is not unusual for up to 30% of the hive to die during transport due to stress. In addition, bees that spend most of their time locked up on trucks are not exposed to what usually live on. Instead, they live on a sweet liquid from corn, usually polluted with pesticides. No one knows for sure what causes bees to disappear, but losing bees is very costly for the economy. Bee pollination services are worth over $8 billion a year. With no bees, pollination will have to be done by hand, which would affect the quality of food and increase food prices. We hear a lot about big environmental disasters almost every day. But one of the biggest may just be the loss of that tiny flying insect. Bees are disappearing rapidly. The most persuasive explanation is related to pesticides and their current lifestyle. Now bees have to travel around as beekeepers rent them for pollination. On the way, they may die from stress or food on a diet polluted by pesticides. Whatever the cause, the loss of gees does great harm to the economy. 2020年上海高考概要写作summary writing2(10篇,有解析)

Exercise 1Water is very important for living things. Without water there can be no life on the earth. All animals and plants need water. Man also needs water. Almost everyone knows that water covers three- fourths of the earth5s surface. Most of it, however, is in the oceans and is too salty to drink. Also, some of it is frozen and cannot be used. In fact, less than one percent is left for the use of people, animals and plant life. All through history men have tried to build their homes near the sources of fresh water. Now fresh water is becoming scarce, but more and more is needed because of the increasing number of people in the world. Some industries also use large amounts of fresh water in the production of things such as steel, petrol, paper, rubber and so on.Meanwhile, water problem is becoming more serious and more complex. Our increasing population tremendously increases urban wastes, primarily polluted water. On the other hand, increasing demands for water will decrease substantially the amount of water available for diluting(稀释)wastes. Rapidly expanding industries which involve more and more complex chemical processes will produce larger volume of liquid wastes, and many of these will contain chemicals which are poisonous. To feed our rapidly expanding population, agriculture will have to be intensified. This will involve ever-increasing quantities of agricultural chemicals.Scientists estimate that the problem of water shortage will become severe. Thus it is apparent that effective steps must be taken immediately to develop corrective measures for the pollution problem and to find new ways of saving and producing fresh water as well. Some nations have worked on the problem and are already sharing their information with others. They are trying to keep their rivers from becoming polluted. Deep wells are also being dug, and rain water is being collected in huge artificial lakes. In one way or another, they hope to provide enough water to satisfy the needs of their people. Water is essential for all the living things on the earth.(要点1) With the worldwide increase of population, more water is needed.(要点2) Meanwhile, water sources are getting polluted by poisonous chemical wastes produced by human beings in one way or another.(要点3) Thus measures are being taken to solve this problem, hoping to find better ways to save and producewater to meet the needs.

Campus fire safetyPeople are alarmed by the succession of campus fires in recent years. In each of these accidents, heavy casualties were reported – houses were burned down, students lost their lives, and properties were damaged. Faced with such a chilling fact, people keep asking, “What on earth results in these repeated tragedies?”
面对这样一个令人毛骨悚然的事实,人们不禁反问,“究竟是什么导致这些悲剧反复发生?”A brief survey of them reveals that human factors still prove to be the leading causes. For example, three of these fires were caused by the students’ use of electric water-heaters. As students often leave the heaters unattended, the risks are rather high should the water in the bottle boil dry while no one is around to turn off the power. In other cases, fires were also caused by stoves, candles, cigarette butts, etc.
2016.10(读后续写)Para1: But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Looking through the thick darkness, she felt a strong sense of regret of despair surging through her body. “If only I had not quarreled with Tom.” She thought to herself. However, she didn’t lose heart, keeping shouting in her mind, “Focus! Tom must have called for those helicopters. I have to guide him tomorrow.” She picked up her courage again and managed to find a shelter to stay from the bones-chilling night. Shortly after, she collapsed in fatigue and barely kept her eyes open, sweetly dreaming of seeing Tom.Para2: It was daybreak when Jane woke up.She ate some berries and then made her way along the stream, hoping to find a suitable place to guide the helicopter. Exhausted but full of hope, all of a sudden, she spotted a huge flat rock. She made a great effort to climb onto it and waited with patience. The minute the helicopter came into sight again, she waved the yellow blouse violently and yelled at the helicopter with full-strength. Much to her joy, it did capture the attention of the helicopter and the helicopter landed near the big rock slowly. Without hesitation, Jane jumped off the rock and rushed towards Tom like a flying arrow in floods of tears, hugging tightly in his arms, “please never leave me alone!”2017.06(读后续写)Para1: The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Paul rolled down the window and yelled, “Come on,get in the car.” Without any hesitation, Mac jumped off the bicycle and dashed into the back seat of the car. “What a narrow escape!” Mac sighed in a shaky voice. All of a sudden, Mac let out a scream of terror with eyes wide open. The wild wolf almost caught up. Paul swung his car around immediately and headed straight towards the fierce wolf at a fantastic speed. Mac was too terrified to open his eyes, with fingers firmly crossed praying for safety. Sadly, the violent collisions directly ended the wolf’s life. Para2: A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. Seeing a breathless wolf lying in a pool of blood and Mac frozen with terror, they frowned in puzzlement. “Good to see you two again.”Mac came up to them in floods of tears, holding them tightly in arms. After figuring out what had happened moments ago, they gave Paul and Becky a tight hug and conveyed heartfelt thanks. When Mac gradually regained his calm, three friends waved goodbye to Paul and Becky until their car disappeared into a line of sight. And the three friends continued their bicycle trip to Alaska pleasantly.2017.11(读后续写)Para1: The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Mom insisted that we must make full use of it since we had brought it. David and I cast a look at Dad, hoping he could turn down her crazy idea again. Much to our frustration, he agreed unexpectedly. Mom’s eyes twinkled with pleasure. She pulled over the car and searched for the tent instantly. All of a sudden, she let out a cry of anxiety. “Oh, gosh! We left the tent in the hotel!” she burst out crying like a child. Absolutely speechless as we were, we made up our mind to head back to the hotel. Luckily, we managed to retrieve the tent and even enjoyed a night in our tent for the first time. The next day, we continued our trip pleasantly.Para2: We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. The vast bright blue sky, the limitless fresh green grass, the blossoming wild charming flowers, the group of adorable sheep kept me spellbound. However, all the breathtaking and picturesque scenery faded away compared to my absent-mind and forgetful mom, it dawned on me that without all the unnecessary trouble caused by mom, the journey wouldn’t be such a fan tastic and amazing experience to treasure in my childhood. It was her who brought light to our plain life. I really love my Mum. 2018.06(读后续写)Para1: Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.Startled by the white fluffy rabbit, the horse almost threw me off its back. I hurriedly tightened my grip and couldn't help letting out screams. But after we regained our calm, I was amused both by the thrill and the innocence of the little creature. Seeing it fleeing, cheerily, I turned to my dad, “Dad, can we follow it?” My dad nodded with a tolerant smile. Soon without consciousness, we were miles away up into the mountain and we lost track of the rabbit and of course, the track Uncle Paul had asked us to keep to.Para2: We had no idea where we were and it got dark. We had to get off the horses and tried to figure out the way back, but after many attempts, we still failed---we got lost. I grew a bit anxious, but with dad around, I felt all right. As darkness thickened, dad believed it was safer to stay on the spot and waited for help. It was then that we enjoyed a symphony of nature---the warm breeze ruffling through the trees, the insects buzzing and other animals contributing their unique sounds… This serenity ended as we heard shouts and torches came into our sight. At this time, I felt extremely grateful, to Paul and Tina, to this vacation with my dad, and to natur. 2018.11(概要写作)It’s a wise choice for you to pay a personal visit to the college before you apply for, especially the ones that close to you. (要点四)2019.06(概要写作)(原文)Parents everywhere praise their kids. Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Kids, says, "We've gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more strict." By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they're building their children's confidence, when, in fact, it may be just the opposite. Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that's insincere, make kids afraid to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents' praise has put them.Still, don't go too far in the other direction. Not giving enough praise can be just as damaging as giving too much. Kids will feel like they're not good enough or that you don't care and, as a result, may see no point in trying hard for their accomplishments. So what is the right amount of praise? Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the quantity. If praise is sincere and focused on the effort not the outcome, you can give it as often as your child does something that deserves a verbal reward." We should especially recognize our children's efforts to push themselves and work hard to achieve a goal, "says Donahue, author of Parenting Without Fear: Letting Go of Worry and Focusing on What Really Matters. "One thing to remember is that it's the process not the end product that matters."Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team. But if he's out there every day and playing hard, you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses. Praising the effort and not the outcome can also mean recognizing your child when she has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or finish a book report. But whatever it is, praise should be given on a case-by-case basis and be proportionate(相称的) to the amount of effort your child has put into it.(参考范文)Nowadays parents tend to overpraise their children, which may have bad effects.(要点1)However, inadequate praise can be equally harmful. (要点2)Experts suggest parents pay attention to the quality of their praise and that they should praise the effort rather than the result. (要点3)Parents should also be aware that praise needs to be task-specific and match the amount of effort their children have made. For many high school students, giving an in-class presentation is an approach to their growth. Teachers will call up students, one by one, to present their work in front of the class, and, though it is often tense, many people say it has helped turn them into more confident public speakers. Some educators also credit it with building leadership skills and increasing students’ confidence and understanding of materials. But in the past few years, students have started calling for an end to in-class presentations as they show discrimination against those with anxiety. This week, a tweet posted by a 15-year-old high school student declaring “Stop forcing students to present in front of the class and give them a choice not to” received more than 130,000 retweets and nearly half a million likes. In fact, being a high schooler nowadays is more stressful than ever. Students are burdened with extra hours of homework. They stay up every night till 1:00 a.m. finishing homework on their third Red Bull. Anxiety is increasing at a faster rate than depression as the leading mental-health issue affecting teenagers, a recent study in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics found. These students want more options. They say that every student has unique strengths and that they should be allowed to present their work in ways that speak to those strengths. This might mean presenting alone in front of the teacher, or choosing between several alternatives like producing a piece of art or an essay for private judgment instead of presenting their work orally.Educators have begun to take it seriously. They agree teachers should listen to students and hear their voices and respond to that. If students’ feelings are ignored, they might just walk away. However, not everyone is convinced. Some hold the view that pushing students out of comfort zones is a big part of what they should do as some students are deathly afraid to do it. Giving in-class presentation has been considered beneficial to students’ growth, especially confidence building. Parents' divorce may have some negative effects on their children.Firstly, the love of father is different from the love of mother. Children need both of the love. Without each of the love, they may not grow up healthily.Secondly, in order to raise the family, the single parents have to work harder,so that they may have less time to accompany with their children. The children may feel neglected, which may cause mental problems. Besides, if the single parents get married again, the children may get hurt by calling another person father or mother.
