Will it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and some-times they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The result shows that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention in class.

Contrary to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people

become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

36. During the test, those who were tested were given ______ .

A. no breakfast at all

B. very rich breakfast

C. little food for breakfast

D. different foods or none

37. The result of the test shows that _____ .

A. breakfast has great effect on work and studies

B. breakfast has little to do with a person's work

C. a person will work better if he has simple breakfast

D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast

38. The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don't eat breakfast, you will ______ .

A. lose weight

B. not lose or gain weight

C. be healthier

D. gain a lot of weight

39. according to the passage, if a student does not eat breakfast, ______ .

A. he will fall ill

B. he will fail to listen to his teacher

C. he will not make progress in his study

D. his mind will work more slowly

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish ” the Finnish people are.

Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.

The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.

The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.

With so many loopholes in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “ petty advantages Buf'the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith i n everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real

The morning for our snowmobiling (雪上汽车)adventure finally arrived, and we set off on the hour-and-a-half drive to the resort. A fresh powder had fallen the night before, and everything was frosted white. We couldn ' t have asked

As we drove through the deserted wilderness (荒野),my excitement became stone-cold fear. I had no idea what I

scared me to death. I kept picturing us crashing headlong into a tree or falling off the side of a drop.

But after lunch thing changed. We were the only humans who had been there since the snowfall. The peaceful place, the incredible beauty of the landscape, and the almost sacred experience of sharing a mountain with the wildlife touched my very core (核心).My mind cleared and quieted and my muscles relaxed.

As we drove the last leg of the run, I began to resent being afraid to drive. Deep down, I wanted to be in charge of the thing that scared me. It made me angry that fear was keeping me from something I really wanted to do. The day was coming to an end, and the resort was only a few miles a

way. I knew that if I didn ' t take my chance now, I would

regret it.

I signaled for my husband to pull over. I wanted to drive, although my heart pounded (重击).I stared off slowly

and felt the wind in my face. I smiled and sped up a little. I let out a “ Yee-haw!” and went full out, taking my

husband on the best ride of the day.

Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.

For most of the time this a conversation ” goes on below the level of consciousness. At times, however, we beco me aware of it. This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between our expectations and meaning. Whensuccessful matching is being experienced, our question of the text continues at the unconscious level.

Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page, others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers.

There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that is to do not with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a a process ” conversation as opposed to a a content ” conversation.

It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading. If we are an advanced reader our ability to hold a process conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed. Not so our ability to hold a content conversation. It is just this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.

48. ______________________________________________________________________________ As a kind of conversation between the reader and the text, it becomes conscious only when _____________________________________________ .

A The reader has trouble understanding what the author says

C. conscious or unconscious level of comprehension

D. translating criticizing or analyzing a text

51. If you want to develop our reading ability at an advanced level, we should ______ .

A. pay more attention to the content of a texts

B. makes our reading process more conscious

C. lean to use different ways in reading different texts

D. take a critical attitude towards the writer ' s ideas

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical (完全相同的)twins they willed very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. Wemight send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

52. If a child is born with low intelligence, he can _____ .

A. Become a genius

B. Reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings

C. Not reach his intelligence in his life

D. Still become a genius if he should be given special education

53. In the second paragraph, the underlined sentence means “if we ____ . ”

A. take out two different persons

B. pick any two persons

C. choose two different persons

D. choose two persons with different intelligence

54. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows ______ .

A. the part that birth plays

B. the importance of their positions

C. the role of environment on intelligence

D. the importance of their intelligence

55. The best title of the passage can be _______ .

A. Effect of education

His art and talent were recognized by almost no one. He suffered from a mental illness that led him to cut off part of his left ear in 1888 and to shoot himself two years later. But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time. Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The van Gogh Year” in his honor. And the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the biggest collection of his masterpieces, is marking the anniversary with exhibitions throughout the year. The museum draws around 1.3 million visitors every year. Some people enjoy the art and then learn about his life. Others are first interested in his life, which then helps them understand his art. Van Gogh was the son of a pastor(牧师). He left school when he was just 15. By the age of 27, he had already tried many jobs including an art gallery salesman and a French teacher. Finally in 1880, he decided to begin his studies in art. Van Gogh is famed for his ability to put his own emotions into his paintings and show his feelings about a scene. His style is marked by short, broad brush strokes(笔画).“Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I have before my eyes, I use color more freely, in order to express myself more forcibly,” he w rote in a letter to his brother in 1888. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his short life. He relied heavily on the support from his brother, an art dealer who lived in Paris. But now his works are sold for millions of dollars. Edwarda O’Bara was a 17-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes(糖尿病)medication and slipped into a diabetic coma. Just before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kaye O’Bara, to never leave her side, and her family never d id. Edwarda’s father, Joe O’Bara, and Kaye took care of their daughter—reading to her, playing her music, making sure she was turned every two hours, bathed, given insulin(胰岛素)and given nourishment through a feeding tube—until their deaths in 1976 and 2008, respectively. After that, Edwarda’s sister Colleen O’Bara took over. Her family’s unending care for her became a story told across the world. And visitors from across the world traveled to the Miami Gardens home every year, sometimes appearing at the doorstep on random days, other times for Edwarda’s yearly birthday party, a cheerful affair with decorations, balloons and cake. Through it all, Edwarda remained in a coma. But to her family and followers she remained alive. Colleen O’Bara described her as “the best sister in the whole wide world.” “She taught me so much, especially after she was in the coma, ” Colleen O’Bara said, “She taught me so much about unconditional love that I couldn’t say I had it before. She taught me about patience that I didn’t have before. I learned so much from taking care of my sister.
