FPGA IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INTEGER MIPS PROCESSOR IN HANDEL-C AND ITS APPLICATION TO HUMAN FACE DETECTION

ABSTRACT We present an FPGA implementation of an integer-based MIPS processor using the Handel-C hardware design language (HDL). The processor is implemented on the RC200 development board from Celoxica. The processor implementation is modified from the standard MIPS architecture to take into account the limitations and features of the board. A face detection system is implemented with the processor to show its application towards real-time image processing. 1. INTRODUCTION MIPS is a conventional register based RISC architecture widely used for teaching purposes [1]. However, due to it’s low complexity and easily extendable instruction set, it is easy to customise for special purposes and therefore it is ideal for implementation of specific applications. There are two approaches to implementing such a processor, the first approach being custom VLSI. This approach is a very expensive once-off approach. The alternative approach is reconfigurable hardware by FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), which is much cheaper. Furthermore, such an approach allows the hardware to be easily modified, which allows debugging and modification even once deployed. The system is implemented on a Celoxica RC200 prototyping board [2] and developed in Handel-C [3], except for the noise reduction program which is written in MIPS assembly code. Handel-C is a high-level HDL for targeting FPGAs and it greatly simplifies the process of hardware design. The accessible and familiar C-like syntax, and the availability of C-like constructs (like loops, structs, if statements, functions, etc), make it a very attractive HDL, especially for software programmers from a C/C++ background. However, Handel-C also provides specialized constructs to aide efficient hardware design. A face detection system is implemented based on the processor developed. The system captures a live video stream and isolates the facial regions (or more precisely, the skin regions) of the video stream in realtime. This is a useful technique with many potential applications, such as region-based variable bit rate encoding, security, and drowsiness detection based on blink rate detection. This paper details the design of the face detection system. Section 2 deals with the specifications and architecture of the processor. Section 3 briefly discusses Handel-C and how it was used to implement the design. Section 4 describes the face detection system as a whole, and finally our conclusions are presented in Section 5.

2. INTEGER MIPS PROCESSOR Fig. 1 shows the system architecture of the processor implemented for the execution of the noise reduction program. The processor is based on the architecture presented in [1], with some modifications to overcome hardware limitations and to optimize the processor for the face detection system. The processor is pipelined, with five stages: IF (instruction fetch), ID (instruction decode and register fetch), EX (execution), MEM (memory access), and WB (register writeback).

2.1 Instruction set The instruction set is based on the standard MIPS instruction set as presented in [1], with some differences. A proprietary instruction is included to specifically improve the performance of the noise reduction program. The bpni (branch if pixel not included) is a bit-conditional branch instruction: a specific bit (bit 24, i.e. the colour threshold bit appended to the RGB word by the video input sub-system, see section 4 for elaboration) is inspected – if the bit is ‘0’, thereby denoting that the pixel is to be ‘excluded’, then the branch is taken. The effect of the lui (load upper immediate) instruction has a subtle difference compared to [1]. According to [1] after loading the lower halfword of the immediate into the upper halfword of the register, the lower bits of the register are all set to 0. However, the lui instruction as implemented here does not set the lower bits of the register to 0: those bits are untouched, and hold their previous value. Other standard instructions implemented are: bne (branch if not equal), addi (add immediate), add (add register operands), lw (load word), and sw (store word).
