AStarting high school life can be extremely exciting and at the same time nerve-wracking. You may worry about all these things: what classes to take, what to wear on the first day of school and what will everyone think of you? But so far high school has been the best experience for me ever.On my first day of high school, I asked a senior where my class was, and he told me it was "on the fourth floor, next to the pool". I found out five minutes later that we didn't even have a fourth floor and had no pool either! Besides that event, I didn't have any trouble with the older kids.I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load and the size of the school. I went from fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours so I had to learn time management pretty quickly! Our class size was around 550, so being exposed to so many new people was a big change. Getting involved in clubs, sports, music and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade. I t’s always useful to have an upperclassman friend! The best suggestion I can give about the four years you spend in high school is to learn things for the sake of learning, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve crammed(突击式学习) on the night before and got an A, but now I don't remember anything. I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Relating to academics, don't take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between "AP Chemistry”and “Racquet Sport”, the first will prove to be more useful!1. What does the underlined word "nerve-wracking" in Paragraph 1 mean?________A. Worrying B Boring. C. Astonishing D. Relaxing.2. According to the author, the best way to deal with the increased homework load is________A. to spend much more time on his homework B to know how to make the best use of timeC to finish his homework as soon as possible D. to try to do his homework more carefully3. Which of the following is TRUE about the author's advice on high school life?A Making as many upperclassmen friends as possibleB. Taking an active part in various after school activities.C. Trying to obtain useful knowledge instead of getting good grades.D. Choosing easy but useful courses instead of practical ones.4. In writing the text, the author intends to________.A. tell others his first-day experience at high school C describe what can be learnt at high schoolB. express his opinions on high school education D. share his life and thoughts at high schoolBRuffles(褶边)add a feminine touch to an outfit. How much will you pay for a dress, a cardigan and the cheaper shirt?______A. 129.00 dollarsB. 159. 45 dollarsC. 168. 95 dollarsD. 178, 50 dollarsCFootball, to me, is more than just a game. I have probably learned more than valuable lessons from it than from school. When I joined the team freshman year, I didn't realize what I was getting into. Even though I had been playing since fourth grade and knew it was a hard work, nothing would prepare me for the effort I would put into football that year. We worked all summer in the weight room and ran on the track to get in physical and mental shape before the season.See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else, so running on the track wasn't only about getting in shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we felt like we were going to pass out. At the beginning, I was immature( 幼稚的) and only thought of myself, sometimes even giving up when I was tired or hurting. Then after the third game I had a season-ending injury. Imagine working all summer and then only being able to play three games! I needed an operation on my arm and at least five months to recover. After freshman year I decided that I would always give my best effort. Playing football in thecollege has taught me so much more than just what my tasks are on a particular play or how to block.I have learned to think about others first, and realized how important working hard is. Being with all my friends, even sweating and bleeding with them, really made us unite as a group of hard-working young men, who will succeed in life.9. What is the text mainly about?________A. How the author dislikes the game of football.B. When the author began to play football.C. How the author has changed his attitude to football.D. What sport the author likes best.10. The author thinks football is________A. just a game B of a mental sport C hard to be out-of-date D. not worth his effort11. In the third paragraph, the phrase "getting in shape "probably means “________”A. becoming physically fitB. designing the playgroundC losing weight D. measuring the trackDLife on land probably began about 430 million years ago, though it has existed in the water for perhaps as much as 3, 000 million years. When we think of the first thing on land, we probably think of strange animals coming out of the oceans, but in fact no animals could have been living if plants had not been on land first. Plants had to be on land before animals arrived. They supplied the first land animals with the surrounding and food necessity, since they, the plants, are the only form of life that is able to get and store energy. The first plants to exist out of the water were probably certain kinds of algae(海藻)which were followed by other plants that grew close to the ground and needed water in which to reproduce. Once the move to land had been made, however, evolution(进化) took place quickly. By the end of 100 million years, plants had developed their roots (根), and some had got treelike forms since height was very important in gaining sunlight. About 300 million years ago, much of the world was covered with forests of huge trees. In most ways they were like modern trees. They had roots, leaves, wood, but mostly they had not developed seeds.12. The main idea of the first paragraph is_______.A life on land probably began 430 years ago B. the first animals on land came from oceansC. there wouldn't be animals without plantsD. plants are the only form of life that is able to get and store energy13. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?_______A. Algae has existed for more than 430 million years.B. It is impossible that algae might be earliest plant on land.C Plants get food from animals in the oceansD. Evolution began after animals appeared on land14. According to the passage, ______appeared earlier than_______.A apples; orangesB oranges: applesC oranges; rosesD algae; wheat15. In which part of the magazine can you most probably find this passage?A technologyB scienceC healthD travel第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

It's no surprise that her recognition can bring overnight sales fortune that defeats most, if not all, marketing campaigns. The star features about 20 products each year on her "Favorite Things" show. There's even a term for it: the Oprah Effect. Her television career began unexpectedly. When she was 16 years old, she had the idea of being a journalist to tell other people's stories in a way that made a difference in their lives and the world. She was on television by the time she was 19 years old. And in 1986 she started her own television show with a continuous determination to succeed at first.TIME magazine wrote, "People would have doubted Oprah Winfrey's swift rise to host of the most popular talk show on TV. In a field dominated by white males, she is a black female of big size. As interviewers go, she is no match for Phil Donahue. What she lacks in journalistic toughness, she makes up for in plainspoken curiosity, rich humor and, above all understanding. Guests with sad stories to tell tend to bring out a tear in Oprah's eye. They, in turn, often find themselves exposing things they would not imagine telling anyone, much less a national TV audience.""I was nervous about the competition and then I became my own competition raising the bar every year, pushing, pushing, pushing myself as hard as I knew. It doesn't matter how far you might rise. At some point you are likely to fall if you' re constantly doing what we do, raising the bar. If you' re constantly pushing yourself higher, higher the law of averages, you will at some point fall. And when you do, I want you to know this, remember this:there is no such thing as failure. Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction" as Oprah addressed graduates at Harvard on May 30.4. What does the Oprah Effect refer to in the first paragraph?A. the influence on talk show hostsB. the power of Oprah's opinions.C. the effect on a business.D. the audience of Oprah's talk show.5. What can be inferred about Oprah's television career?A. She must have been challenged a lotB. She gained fame as planned.C. It lives up to her parents' expectation.D. She once gave up on her choice.6. What message did Oprah give to Harvard graduates?A. Success comes after failure.B. Pushing physical limits makes no senseC. Aiming higher hurtsD. Failure is part of life.7. Which of the following best describes Oprah Winfrey?A. Friendly.B. HumorousC. Determined.D. PatientCJules Verne was born on 8 February1828 inthe French city of Nantes. From an early age, he had a fascination with exploration and discovery. When he was six, his teacher, Madame Sambin, told him stories about her husband, who disappeared while traveling the world on a ship 30 years before. She told her class that he was like Robinson Crusoe, a fictional castaway who lived on a desert island. Verne would later write stories about similar characters. In 1847, Verne was sent by his family to study law at a university in Paris, but he preferred to write novels, poems and plays. After graduating, he realized he wanted to write adventure stories based on science and technology.Thishad never been done before, but Verne was sure that it would be a success. His first story, Five Weeks in a Balloon, was published in September 1862. His career lasted for more than 40 years, during which time he wrote more than 60 gripping stories. To begin with, Verne wrote positive and optimistic books. Many of these were to be his most popular creations. Although some included fantastical elements, they were usually based in scientific fact, making them believable. These happy stories weren’t to last. As he got older, Verne became less confident in the idea that science and technology were always good for the planet. His books started to include more scientists who used technology for their own-sometimes evil - purposes. Verne died on 24 March 1905, but new books continued tobe published until 1919. These stories were based on ideas Verne had written about while he was still alive, but featured new characters and plots created by his son, Michel. In the 20th century, his books were translated into more than 140 languages and several successful film versions were released. His creations have been recognized as an inspiration for many scientists and inventors. Many of the futuristic ideas from his most popular books have since come true.8. To explain how Verne began his writing career.9. What does the underlined word “This” refer to in Paragraph 2:A. Writing novels, poems and plays.B. Studying law.C. Graduating from university.D. They were partly written by Berne’s son.11. Which of the following best describes Verne?A. Talented and productive.B. Popular and caring.C. Optimistic and generous.D. Friendly and honest.DA year ago I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work paid off. My mom had spent a lot on my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, took part in various clubs, and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new part of my life.Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn't like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the mostdifficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was missing my family, my home and everything in my hometown so much and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies. I also found a ton of jobs. In any free time, I started forcing myself to go to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think about how lonely I felt. Soon after, I began to control my eating, considering it another solution to my homesickness. But soon there was something wrong with me.Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor told me I had no choice but to take time away from school, I started to fear. How could I stop? School was what I was best at. “I’m not so bad,” I thought in my head. But the result was that I was taken to hospital again a month later and my mother camewoefully. I had to take a semester off from school, and go to the treatment center near my home.If there are girls who are suffering similarly, I hope you know that there is hope and that you should have a positive attitude towards life. Though you may feel alone, there are so many people who can understand your struggle. That’s why I want to share my story.12. Why did the author push herself during high school?A.
