There are many kinds of fruit bats and they are different in size from one place to the next. For example, some fruit bats are no more than two inches long. Others, though, are more than 16 inches in length.Flying foxes have pointed teeth. Most people have been taught that this is a design for a carnivore. However, they are 100 percent vegetarians. Their diet consists of flowers and fruit. When feeding on fruit, they drink the juice.Flying foxes have trouble getting into the air if they fall on the ground, so they feed on fruit on the trees and will not follow a meal if it drops to the ground. They get their water by flying over rivers and lakes and thus avoid having to land.Flying foxes are found in Australia. Living in large groups, they sometimes gather (聚集) by tens of thousands in rainforests and near rivers. Like most bats, they rest by hanging upside down, and sleep during the day and feed at night. They may have to travel for long distances during certain times of the year in order to find food. They will make the journey back to their home, though, before the sun comes up. Unlike most bats, this flying animal uses its sight rather than echolocation (回声定位) to search for food. The flying fox plays an important role in pollination (传粉) in Australia, and its droppings help with the spread of seeds. However, many farmers in Australia are forced to cover their fruit to keep the bats from destroying them.A.They are foxlike.B.They are big eaters.C.They are big in size. D.They are carnivores.解析:选A 细节理解题。

根据第一段中的“also known as the ‘flying fox’”和“it has large eyes and looks like a fox”可知,果蝠因为长得像狐狸,因此也叫狐蝠。

2.What is difficult for fruit bats?A.Drinking river water.B.Flying long distances.C.Landing on the ground.D.Taking off from the ground.解析:选D 细节理解题。

根据第三段中的“Flying foxes have trouble getting into the air if they fall on the ground”可知,果蝠落地后再飞向空中会很困难。

3.What is special about fruit bats compared with other kinds of bats?A.They sleep upright.B.They feed during the day.C.They have good eyesight.D.They live in large groups.解析:选C 细节理解题。

根据倒数第二段中的“Unlike most bats, this flying animal uses its sight rather than echolocation (回声定位) to search for food”可知,果蝠的视力比其他蝙蝠好。

4.Where does this text probably come from?A.A storybook. B.A travel guide.C.A nature magazine. D.A newspaper report.解析:选C 文章出处题。

本文主要介绍了果蝠的外貌特征和一些生活习性,由此可推断文章可能选自一本自然杂志。

Ⅱ.看图说话Baby: Mom, why paint me black?Mom: My love, in this way, I'm not afraid you are hurt or killed.1.Why does the mother bear make up her baby?To_protect_it.。

Unit 5 Into the wild对于动物的灭绝,很多人猜测是气候的原因,其实,有时候人类才是动物生存最大的威胁。

我们要保护动植物,与它们和谐相处。

Climate change, not human hunting, may have wiped out the thylacine (袋狼), according to a new study based on DNA from thylacines' bones. The meateating marsupials (有袋动物) died out on mainland Australia a few t housand years ago, but survived in Tasmania, an island of southeast Australia se parated from the mainland, until the 1930s. Until then, scientists had believed the cause of this mainland extinction (灭绝) was increased activity from native Australians and dingoes (Australian wild dogs).Scientists behind the University of Adelaide study, which was published in t he Journal of Biogeography on Thursday, collected 51 new thylacine DNA samples f rom fossil bones and museum skins — the largest data set of thylacine DNA to da te. The paper concluded that climate change starting about 4,000 years ago — in particular drier seasons caused by the weather systemsknown as El Niño — Southern Oscillation (南方涛动) — was likely the main cause of the mainland extinction. The ancient DNA showed that the mainland extinction of thylacines was rapid, and not the result of loss of genetic diversity. There was also evidence of a p opulation crash in thylacines in Tasmania at the same period of time, reducing t heir numbers and genetic diversity.Associate Professor Jeremy Austin said Tasmania would have been protected fr om mainland Australia's warmer, drier climate due to its higher rainfall. He arg ued that climate change was “the only thing that could have caused, or at least started, an extinction on the mainland and caused a population crash in Tasmani a.”“They both happened at about the same time, and the other two things that h ad been talked about in the past that may have driven thylacines to extinction on the mainland were dingoes and humans. So the only explanation left is climate change. And because the population crash happened at the same time and the speci es went extinct on the mainland, our argument is that there's a common theme the re and the only common theme is that there is this change in climate.”。
