Dialogue

我刚来北京,对于中国即将举行的奥运会也非常感兴趣,你能不能简单地告诉我一些关于北京奥运会的基本信息呢?B: Thank you, Jay, of course I can tell you something. As a volunteer, I have the responsibility to promote the Beijing Olympic Games. What would you like to know? A: 太好了!

B: Oh, no problem, I will explain to you one by one. First, let’s talk about the slogan of the Beijing Games. That is “One World, One Dream.” This slogan reflects the essence of the universal values of the Olympic spirit. In spite of our differences, we come together for the Olympic Games. This slogan was chosen from thousands of proposals submitted by people across China and around the world.

B: “One World, One Dream” is simple in expression, but profound in meaning. It conveys the lofty ideal of the people in Beijing, as well as in China, i.e., the Chinese people and the world people share the same globe and will create a bright future hand in hand. It also voices the aspiration of the Chinese people to contribute to the establishment of a peaceful and beautiful world.

这个口号肯定也反映了北京奥运会的主要理念吧?B: Yes, you are right. This slogan also reflects the core concept of the Beijing Games. The concept can be understood in three aspects; they are “green Olympics”, “high-tech Olympics”, and “people’s Olympics”. It also reflects the common belief in peace, progress and harmonious development, living together in friendship, cooperation and mutual benefit, and pursuit of happy life.

B: With pleasure. The mascot of Beijing Games is indeed composed of five pretty parts. In Chinese, mascot literally means an auspicious object, something that brings you good luck. There are five mascots for the Beijing 2008 Games, known as Fuwa, to match the five Olympic rings. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan, the Olympic Flame, Yingying, the Tibetan Antelope and Nini, the Swallow. When you put their names together they say “Beijing Welcomes You.”

B: Sure. In their headpieces, you can see the five elements of nature—the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky—all stylistically rendered in ways that represent the deep traditional influences of Chinese folk art and ornament ation. Let’s first look at Beibei. Beibei is the fish. In China’s traditional culture and art, fish are symbols of prosperity. Jingjing is the Fuwa in the form of a panda. The lotus designs in Jingjing’s headdress, which are inspired by the porcelain paintings of the Song Dynasty, represent the desire to preserve the beauty of nature for all generations.

B: Yes. Huanhuan is a child of fire, symbolizing the Olympic Flame and the passion of sport. The fiery designs of his head ornament are drawn from the famed Dunhuang murals. Then is Yingying, which is a fast and agile antelope. His head ornament
