Like human beings, animals need to communicate with each other to survive. They do not speak to each other in the same way as we do; instead they use many different sounds and actions to express themselves. For example, bees make a buzzing noise, lions and bears growl, cats miaow, and dogs bark.

So what are the things that make English so difficult for foreign people to learn?English doesn't necessarily have more regular consonant(辅音) or vowel(元音) sounds than other languages, but how the stress is placed on some of those consonants or vow els makes it such a difficult language for learners. There are hard and soft consonants lik e “c〞taking on a “k〞sound or an “s〞sound depending upon the situation. There are silent letters in some words and then some consonants that take on an entirely different sound (like “the〞) when combined. The changes in the pronunciation of words make Eng lish much more difficult to learn.Another thing that makes English difficult to learn has to do with verb tense. Some languages have very limited changes in verb tense, sometimes just present and past, whic h makes it relatively simple to grasp. English,on the other hand,is a bit more difficult i n this area. For example,in different situations it may be proper to use any of the follow ing tenses: present, past, future, past perfect or present perfect. The verb “choose “can b e used in the following forms depending on tense: choose, chose or chosen. This can be very difficult for a foreigner to grasp.Slang is more widely used in American English than proper grammar. In the US jus t knowing the language as it's generally taught isn't enough. In every single region or eve n close neighborhoods, the same slang terms make an almost entirely different language. I n some areas there are repeatedly used terms that wouldn't even be found in the Webster' s Dictionary. They are created by locals and only locals understand them. This can make it very difficult for someone not familiar with the language to get used to it,especially if they don't remain in one area for a very long period.1.The purpose of this passage is to________.A.give advice on how to learn English wellB.tell us why English is very difficult to learnC.encourage us to speak formal EnglishD.tell us how to deal with slang terms in English2.According to the passage, the letter “c〞in English______.A.is always stressedB.never take s on an “s〞soundC.has at least two soundsD.is often silent3.Compared with some other languages,________.A.English has more changes in verb tenseB.English has more regular rules of pronunciationC.English verbs have fewer formsD.English has more vowel sounds4.From the passage we know that slang________.A.is spread all over the worldB.can only be found in American EnglishC.is commonly used by some particular groupsD.has meanings that can only be found in dictionaries5.It can be inferred from the passage that________.A.pronunciation is the most difficult thing in learning EnglishB.all the slang terms should be added to the Webster's DictionaryC.if you want to learn English well you first should learn some slang termsD.people may understand the local language after living in a place for yearsBThe Super Ball has been popular for many years,so we think most of us have play ed with a Super Ball. These rubber bouncy(弹性的)balls are famous for the amazing heig hts they can reach bounce after bounce. The Super Ball was invented in 1964 by Norman Stanley, who was a chemist at the Bettis Rubber Company. He finally sold his invention to a toy manufacturer Wham-O.Wh am-O helped him to perfect his invention into the famous toy we know today. The Super Ball is a rubber ball known for its high bounce and restitution(恢复原状).How high? You might be surprised! When dropped from the shoulder level,a Super Ball will bounce back almost all the way to where it was dropped. Thrown towards the ground by an average adult,a Super Ball can bounce as high as a three-story building.Wham-O once created a large Super Ball, whose size was the same as a bowling ba ll. It was dropped from the top of an Australian hotel and destroyed a parked car on its second bounce! In the 1960s,the Super Ball quickly became a fashionable toy. By the end of 1965,Wham had sold over six million of the bouncy balls. Finally, miniature versions(微型版)of the bouncy balls could be made as small as a dime in toy vending machines. The Super Ball also can claim(宣称)to be the inspiration for the name of one of the most popular sporting events in the world. Lamar Hunt, who founded the American Foot ball League, jokingly suggested that each year's football championship(冠军)be called the “Super Bowl “after watching his kids play with a Super Ball. It may have just been a jo ke,but sports writers quickly picked up on the name!6.The Super Ball interests us very much probably because ________.A.it can bounce repeatedly(反复地)very highB.it can be made at homeC.it has an attractive appearanceD.it has a history of hundreds of years7.Wham-O thought that Norman Stingley's invention________.A.was nothing but a toy for childrenB.could probably bring him interestsC.was worth a large amount of moneyD.has a scientific meaning8.The author shows a Super Ball's great power of bounce by ________.A.giving some practical examplesB.throwing it towards the groundC.offering some exact numbersD.comparing the differences9.What probably happened in the early 1960s?A.The Super Ball was worth only a dime.B.The Super Ball destroyed cars sometimes.C.The Super Ball became smaller and smaller.D.The Super Ball was popular among people.10.We can learn from the last paragraph that the “Super Bowl “is concerned with _ _______.A.an activity that kids like bestB.a bowl used to have dinnerC.a sporting eventD.an interesting storyⅣ.翻译句子1.妈妈在做家务而爸爸在打牌。

For example, in ancient times, Chinese people relayed(传递) fire signals(信号) at night and smoke signals in the day from one Great Wall watchtower(岗楼) to another so that war messages could be rapidly sent over great distances.
