We have become numb to our speed and numb to the road signs flashing by.My family lives on the edge of Lancaster County. Only thirty miles from home,I hit the brakes, and we began to roll, slowly, behind a horse-drawn carriage. We began to open our eyes again. We saw familiar green hills and the farm with the best watermelons. I rolled down the windows, and we breathed again.Just-cut hay and a barn full of dairy cattle. At five miles per hour, you remember what you forget at sixty-five.You are thinking about a place, even when you are moving from place to place.I am a placemaker. A homemaker, too. I am a mother of a young kid at home, and alsoa writer and a gardener. But,for me,those roles are wrapped up with the one big thing I want to do with the rest of my life:I want to cultivate a place and share it with others. The place I make with my family is a red-brick farmhouse built in l880. It has quite a few nineteenth-century bedrooms and a few acres of land, and we love nothing more than to fill them with neighbors and friends. We grow vegetables and flowers, keep a baker’s dozen of egg—laying chickens, and, since we moved in three years ago,we have planted many, many trees.Living with my life’s purpose does not allow for much travel. I need to be here, feeding the chickens and watering the tomatoes. Any extra in the budget, and we spend it on trees. But I learned something at the end of our family road trip.Travel can help me in the task of caring for my own place. When I slow down and pay attention to the road between here and there, travel tells me the connections between my place and all the other places.5. A.devotes most of his energy and time to building his houseB.is ready to help anyone in need in the communityC.makes a creative design for others’ housesD.is good at cultivating a place and sharing it with others8. What can be the best title of the passage?A.On the Way Home B.Never Travel againC.Escape from a Family Life D.Life on the FarmCWe can stay young forever. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging. His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese medicine system called “shen”.According to Shen, it is the kidney which adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the shen system slow the aging process, says a report in The Telegraph newspaper. We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles, among others. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves. So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young? This is where Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine comes in. But how effective it will be, only time can tell.9. How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?A. By studying Western medicine.B. By learning traditional Chinese medicine.C. By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.D. By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.10. What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?A. That’s because t he school was the first to install ( 安装 ) the specially-designed Pavegen floor tiles (地砖) in America. The tiles use kinetic energy (动能) expanded by the kids and transform it into electricity that can be used to power classroom lights, science projects and charge electronic devices. The first US installation of Pavegen tiles near the school’s student center is thanks to 14-year-old Zach Halem, who managed to convince the officials to purchase them.Besides providing fun green energy, the tiles also serve as a learning tool. Every time a student steps on one, a brightly-lit LED board provides instant feedback (反馈信息) on how much energy was generated. Depending on the force, every step results in between one to seven watts-enough power to light an LED street lamp for about 30 seconds.Made largely from rubber and other recycled materials the tiles are invented by the 26-year-old British industrial designer Laurence Kembell-Cook. While new to the US, they have been installed in numerous places in Europe, ranging from a London underground station to a marathon track in Paris. However, it was not until Pavegen started getting popular in London schools that Laurence realized that his invention not only saved energy, but was also fun!Though the young inventor will not give too many details about the technology behind this green tile, he says that it is very different from other kinetic energy harvesting systems.Whatever the secret, let’s hope more US schools decide to install these fun tiles. In fact, why stop at schools? These tiles could be installed everywhere, from sidewalks to homes. Then we could all be “green” and have fun! Who knew that was even possible?13. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. American students are encouraged to run and jump as much as possible.B. “Going green” means generating less trash or making an attempt to recycle.C. New York’s Riverdale Country School took a different way to go green.D. New York’s Riverdale Country School is the first US school to try new ways to go green.14. 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 A My daughter Alisa was born blind in her right eye and was bullied (欺侮) pretty severely in school. So I quitted my job as a babysitter and then schooled my daughter heart and soul at home. A year ago a boy of 14 befriended my daughter on Facebook after reading something Alisa wrote about bullying. Today he messaged her and asked if she would like six tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They have never met in person but she said, “Sure! That would be great.” Then I received a call from his mother explaining why her son had chosen my daughter. She said he thought my daughter deserved them because of all the good she did in the community. Her son, she explained, had experienced a similar situation and was also home schooled. What she said is true. Now my daughter Alisa continues to teach groups of girls in trouble in our community how to look within themselves for the positive and how to be their own person. Everything taken into consideration, we decided to meet the mother and the boy at a local bike shop. After meeting, the boy approached my car and my daughter gave him a hug and thanked him for his generosity. She told him that she had never been to a baseball game and that she was going to take her entire family, including myself, her dad, little sister, her cousin and an aunt who has brain cancer. We all thanked one another, got in our car, and went our way. As we drove home my daughter opened the envelope. Inside it were the tickets and $100 each to buy hot dogs, pay for parking and not have any worries but a great time. My daughter has always been the giver and now she and our family are the receivers and I can not tell you how incredibly honored we feel to be on the other end. What an incredible young man to have such a kind idea. 1. What did the author once do according to the passage? A. She was a ticket seller. B. She was a school teacher. C. She was a babysitter. D. She was a social worker. 2. How did the boy get to know the author’s daughter? A. They met when buying tickets to a baseball game. 由莲山课件提供http://www.5ykj.com/ 资源全部免费 由莲山课件提供http://www.5ykj.com/ 资源全部免费 B. They got in touch via the Internet. C. They became familiar when talking face to face. D. They went to the same school and met each other. 3. Why did the boy want to offer free tickets to Alisa? A. Because Alisa is a disabled girl. B. Because he has a lot money to share. C. Because Alisa often helps those in trouble. D. Because he has a similar situation with Alisa. 4. Which of the following best describes the passage? A. Good is rewarded with good. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed. C. Two heads are better than one. D. Where there is a will, there is a way. B Electricity bills can be highly expensive and the power we consume comes at an even greater cost to the environment when you consider that over 85% of the electricity produced in the United States comes from fuels. Whether you’re concerned about cleaning up the environment or you simply want to reduce your electricity bill, residential wind power generators(发电机)could be a solution. Producing wind power at home will not work for everyone. If you live in a over-populated residential area, there may be certain laws and zoning requirements that prohibit the use of windmills(风车).If you live on 1 acre of land or more, you probably won’t have any issues but you should investigate carefully to make sure that wind power generators are both legal and practical where you live. Even if there are no laws or regulations prohibiting wind power generators you still need to be in a location that gets enough wind on a regular basis. Some producers of wind generators recommend that you live in an area with wind speeds that average at least 10 mph. Newer models have been developed recently that can operate with wind speeds as low as 4 mph but maximum efficiency is achieved at higher wind speeds. Before you fix a wind powered system, you will have to determine your power requirements. Will you be using it to charge a small battery for a boat or vehicle or will you need enough power to run your entire household and be completely off the grid(电网)?Once you know what your power requirements are,you can start shopping around for a system that can meet those needs. Wind power generators are a great solution for a lot of people. They’re an ideal solution for remote locations where it would be impractical or simply too expensive to tap into the grid. They are quiet and totally clean, producing no pollution. They require no fuel and very little maintenance. Residential wind power offers a lot of benefits but it’s not for everyone. You’ll have to have some money up front to pay for the system and equipment;however, you could save quite a bit of money if you’re able to do much of the work yourself. You’ll also need to live in an area that gets enough wind to make the equipment worthwhile. You’ll need to do your homework before you make a purchase, but wind power generators could be a great solution for producing clean, low-cost energy. 5. What is the main idea of the first paragraph? A. Electricity bills can be highly expensive. B. Most of the electricity in the US comes from fuels.
