约克大学：11、81、34 MSc/Diploma in Environmental Science and Management This course will provide a firm grounding, through its core modules, in the fundamental principles of environmental science that underpins environmental management. It will prepare students for jobs in environmental consultancy and business, in government and non-governmental organisations and in environmental research, either in the UK or overseas. A wide choice of optional modules allows students to structure their degrees according to their own specific interests in environmental science, ecology and conservation and environmental policy and economics. Through its emphasis on research, environmental assessment methods, and the application of critical thinking to specific case studies, the course will equip students to analyse and tackle the complex, multi-faceted problems that characterise environmental management.

The approach to both teaching and research within the Environment Department emphasises the value of multi-disciplinary approaches to address policy-related problems. This is strengthened through close links with its two associated research institutions: the Central Science Laboratory and the Stockholm Environment Institute. The course benefits from input from staff from these institutions in the form of case-study based teaching and joint supervision of dissertation research projects

All Environment degree programmes have a 'modular' structure, where each module comprises a 10 credit unit or multiple of this. A 10 credit module is equivalent to 100 hours of work, typically comprising 18 contact hours with staff and 82 hours of private-study for a lecture-based module. Modules involving field and laboratory classes have greater proportions of contact time.

Students must accumulate 180 credits for the MSc and 120 credits for the diploma from compulsory and optional modules. Dissertations are compulsory and worth 30 credits for the MSc and 20 credits for the Diploma. MSc students must also complete a summer placement project, worth 50 credits, which is usually done outside the university. Students obtain 70 credits through compulsory taught modules and accumulate the rest through optional modules. During the first three weeks of term students can attend more modules than they will continue with in order to help them decide which ones they want to complete.

All modules on the MSc/Diploma programme are assessed by either exams, course work or a mixture of the two. The majority of modules contain lectures (up to 18 for a 10 credit module) with many also including seminars which require collaborative group work. Seminars are assessed through oral presentations, and/or an independently written essay. Several modules include small group tutorials, which consolidate and further develop material from the lectures. Practical classes range from bench or laboratory practicals to sessions in computer classrooms and are usually assessed through a written report. Plans are currently being made for several field trips.

Dissertation All students must undertake an independent research dissertation which is based within the university. The length of this is 15,000 words for an MSc and 5,000 words for a diploma. Environment staff provide titles and descriptions of dissertations although students can also suggest their own. All the skills necessary to undertake a dissertation are taught in the Research Methods module. A dissertation supervisor provides regular guidance for this module, but otherwise students work largely alone. The supervisor can also comment on a first draft of the dissertation.
