Finding a Job or Pursuing Further Studies
After staying on campus for many years, some students
become bored and can'twait to get a job. They are eager to
lead a life that is less stressful intellectually andeconomically.
In their eyes,a job can provide them with opportunities to
solveproblems that will demand a combination of both
academic and practical knowledge. However some students
plan to continue their education in pursuing further degree. As
far as academic preparation is concerned, the knowledge and
skills acquired at anundergraduate level are far from adequate
in the job market. It is a fact that an everincreasing number of
graduates are returning to schoolmotivated by the need
toupdate their knowledge and enhance their skills.
All this indicates that a bachelor's degree can hardly
qualify students for acompetitive position. If I were able to
choose for myself, I would prefer to stay andpursue an M.A.
degree Iknow my choice would mean a commitment of time
andmoney. Opportunities, however.
always take the form of hardships and risks. The
daysmight be rigorous and painstaking, but they would
certainly be fulfilling andrewarding, and would surely lead to a
prosperous future.

After an hour’s flight one of the scientists wrote in his book, Look here for probable metals. Scientists in another airplane, flying over a mountain region, sent a message to other scientists on the ground, Gold possible. Walking across hilly ground, four scientists reported, This ground should be searched for metals. From an airplane over a hilly wasteland a scientist sent back by radio one word, Uranium.None of the scientists had X-ray eyes: they had no magic powers for looking down below the earth’s surface. They were merely putting to use one of the newest methods of locating minerals in the ground—using trees and plants as signs that certain minerals may lie beneath the ground on which the trees and plants are growing.(85)This newest method of searching for minerals is based on the fact that minerals deep in the earth may affect the kind of trees and bushes that grow on the surface. At Watson Bar Creek, a brook six thousand feet high in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada, a mineral search group gathered bags of tree seeds. Boxes were filled with small branches from the trees, and roots were dug out and put into boxes with each bagand box carefully marked. In a scientific laboratory, the parts of the forest trees were burned to ashes and tested. Each small part was examined to learn whether there were minerals in it. Study of the roots, branches, and seeds showed no silver. But there were small amounts of gold in the roots and a little less gold in the branches and seeds. The seeds growing nearest to the tree trunks had more gold than those growing on the ends of the branches. If the trees had not indicated that there was gold in the ground, the scientists would not have spent money to pay for digging deeper. They did dig and found more gold below. When they dug deeper, they found large quantities of gold Scientists were flying over a desert, or hilly wasteland, or a mountain region in order to search for _____ in the ground ()A.treesB.bushesC.seedsD.minerals2、The study of trees, branches, and roots indicates that_____()A.there were larger amounts of gold in the branches than inthe seedsB.there were smaller amounts of gold in the roots than in the branchesC.there were larger amounts of gold in the seeds growing nearest to the tree trunks than seeds growing on the ends of the branchesD.there were more gold in the branches than in the roots 3、Which may be the best title for the passage()A.Scientists Searching for Metals with Special PowerB.New Methods of Searching for Trees and BushesC.Gold Could Be Found by Trees and PlantsD.A New Method of Searching for Minerals: Using Trees and Plants4、Based on the passage, all of the following are mentioned as part of a tree that can help find minerals EXCEPT FOR _____()A.leavesB.rootsC.branchesD.seeds5、The scientists were searching for minerals by using _____()A.X-rayB.magic powerC.a special instrumentD.the newest method6、When you have completed your college education, you will look for a job suited to your training, interests, and ambition. For years scientists have asked themselves this question. No animals laugh and smile—only human beings do. So does laughing help us to live longer? The answer seems to lie in that smiling and laughing help us to become less worried and calm, preventing illnesses that are caused by stress. Laughing is really the best medicine. But if you’re unhappy, it can’t do you any good to smile, can it? That’s not true. It is clear that smiling works just in the same way whether you feel like smiling or not. Scientistsin California asked a group of students to act five different feelings: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and fear—just using their faces. Changes in their heart rate, blood pressure and temperature were recorded. Most of the feelings they acted didn’t cause changes, but when the students smiled, their heart rate and their blood pressure went down. That happened even though they were only acting! So even if we feel sad inside, smiling seems to make us feel better. Now, what makes us laugh? (82)It seems that the answer to the question is far from simple. Everyone likes jokes, but we don’t laugh at the same ones. It depends largely on how o ld we are. Comprehension(60points)Directions:There are five reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by four questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A,B,C and D.Choose the best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneWhen my daughter first began competing in school chess tournaments,I often chatted with other parents.Sometimes,I'd ask if they played chess ually, the reply was no.When I volunteered that I was learning to play, their tone was cheerfully joking:"Good luck with that!"If this game is so good for kids, why are adults ignoring it?Seeing someone playing smart phone games,I wanted to say:"Why are you having your kids do chesswhile you do that?"Sure,we parents had work to do,work that helped pay for the lessons our kids were enjoying. But I also wondered if we were sending a subtle message:that learning was for the young.During one tournament,I saw a group of parents. They were playing chess!Just then,a group of kids passed me."Why are adults learning chess?"one asked,in a vaguely teasing tone.I was tired of sitting on the sidelines.I wanted in.And that is how I got a membership card and started throwing myself in.Early on,I was nervous, even though I really had nothing to lose, except my pride.“A master can sometimes play badly,”as one grandmaster(国际象棋大师)put it,,“a fan, never!"And fan I was.It was three hours of concentration and thinking, with my phone turned off.It felt like a gym for the brain.Being a beginner can be hard at any age,but it gets harder as you get older. The phrase"adult beginner"has an air of gentle pity.It implies the learning of something that you should have perhaps already learned.36.What can we learn about other parents from their remarks in Para.1?A.They were indifferent to adult learners.B.They agreed on the idea of learning chess.C.They gave congratulations to the adult learner.D.They thought it odd for an adult to learn chess.37.What was a group of parents doing during one tournament in Para.2?A.Playing chess.B.Enjoying chatting.C.Watching kids play chess.D.Helping kids with their lessons.38.Which of the following is closest in meaning to"sitting on the sidelines"in Para.3?A.Not being noticed.B.Expressing vague ideas.C.Not being involved.D.Following what others do.39.What did the writer think of his experience of learning to play chess?A.It helped him remain calm.B.It helped him train his brain.C.It made him proud of himself.D.It made him question himself.Passage TwoThere's an old fixed understanding about the difference between cats and dogs.Dogs are loving and loyal, while cats are aloof(冷漠离群的)and indifferent. Most cat people, however, probably disagree.Overall, cat research suggests cats do form emotional bonds with their owners.Cats seem to experience separation anxiety, respond to their owners’voices more than to strangers'and look for comfort when scared. But a new study reveals a more complicated picture of our relationship with cats. Adapting a method previously used to study dogs, the scientists found cats—unlike dogs don’t avoid strangers who refuse to help their owners This doesn't mean that the cats in this study were selfish.but they simply didn’t understand how human beings respond to each other. They weren't aware that some of the strangers were being unhelpful. In an experiment,a cat watched as her owner tried to open a box to get at something inside. Two strangers sat on either side of the owner and the owner turned to one of them and asked for help. In"helper"trials, the stranger helped the owner to open thebox.In"non-helper"trials,the stranger refused. The other stranger sat passively, doing nothing. Then, both strangers offered the cat a treat, and the scientists watched to see which stranger the cat approached first.Did she prefer to take food from a helpful stranger over a passive one?Or did she avoid taking food from the non-helper?When this method was used to test dogs, they showed a clear preference. The dogs preferred not to take food from a stranger who refused to help their owner. In contrast, the cats in the study were completely indifferent. They showed no preference for the helpful person and no avoidance(避开)of the unhelpful person,Apparently,as far as cats are concerned, food is food. What should we take from this?An attractive conclusion would be that cats are selfish and don’t care about how their at all. This is an example of human-centered thinking of animals. To really understand cats,we have to get out of this view and think of them as Cats.40.What do most cat people probably disagree with, according to Para1?A.Cats are strange.B.Cats are lovingC.Cats are caringD.Cats are cold.41.What does most research about cats show?A.They don't need their owners'attention.B.They are emotionally attached to their owners.C.They don't experience separation anxiety as dogs doD.They respond to their owners'voices less than dogs do42.What can be learned from the study?A.Cats take food no matter who feeds them.B.Cats refuse food from unhelpful strangers.C.Dogs refuse food from those who anger themD.Dogs take food no matter how they are treated.43.What should we do to better understand cats.according to the last paragraph?A.To treat them as friends.B.To compare them with dogsC.To regard them animals.D.To care about their behavior.Passage ThreeScientists have shown that exercise is linked to brain changes throughout all stages of life and can help the brain develop and stay healhy.Babies, for example, need regular exercise to form connections in the brain. In children.research suggests that exercise improves attention, focus and school performance.I the elderly, exercise has been shown to help slow memory loss. Then how does exercise help the brain?Over the last20years.scientists have learned that exercise can help keep the mind sharp in a number of ways.Exercise improves blood flow to the brain. The blood carries oxygen, contributing to more efficient connections between brain cells.Increasing blood flow is one way that exercise can improve mental abilities. The positive effects of exercise on the brain can be seen in babies, pre-teenagers and adults.Babies are in near constant movement which js extremely important for development This movement n only strenghens their muscles.but also helps their brains form connections. The process continues throughout life but is most intense in infancy(婴儿期)and toddlerhood(学步期),when children are mastering brand-new skills likesitting, standing, walking, running and jumping.Exercise is also healthy for pre-teenagers'brains.In fact, some research suggests that regular exercise can improve school performance.A study found that the effects depended on how much kids exercised. The more days the children attended the exerciseprogram, the more their focus improved. Finally, exercise helps keep the mind sharp during adulthood.Research suggests exercise can increase the size of the hippocampus,an important area of the brain, which becomes smaller with age,and can increase levels of a protein(蛋白质)that aids he growth of new brain cells. This can help prevent older adults from losing mental abilities and memory.44.How does exercise help the elderly?A.By improving attention.B.By slowing memory loss.C.By connecting with others.D.By controlling cell growth45.How does exercise sharpen the mind according to Para29A.By increasing the brain size.B.By decreasing the protein level.C.By extending the time of concentration.D.By strengthening brain cells'connections46.What is crucial in the development of babies’brains?A.Babies’ability to focus.B.Babies’mastery of skills.C.Babies'muscle strength.D.Babies’near-constant movement47.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Exercise strengthens people's body.B.Exercise helps babies to grow.C.Exercise improves people's lifeD.Exercise benefits the brain.Passage FourIn1542,Francisco de Orellana led the first European voyage down the Amazon River.During this voyage the explorers met a lot of resistance(抵抗)from the local Indians. In one particular tribe the women fighters were so fierce that they drove their male fighters in front of them with spears. Thus the river was named after the famous women fighters of the ancient Greek stories, the Amazons. This voyage also started our wonder of the greatest river and the largest area of rainforest in the world.About20%of all fresh water carried to the oceans is from the Amazon River. The Amazon basin is the world's largest, about the size of Europe. The river is a product of the rainy season, which brings huge rains every summer. This also produces a large area of rainforest, which supports the largest number of diverse plants and animals of any area in the world. The Amazon rainforest is also important when it comes to the future of global warming, asit is a huge natural store of carbon.Up until recently it was thought that the Amazon had fully grown and thus could not take up any more CO2.Experiments have shown this could be wrong and that the Amazon rainforest might be sucking up an additional five tons of CO2from the atmosphere per hectare(公顷)per year. This is because plants react favorably to increased CO2;because it is the raw material for photosynthesis(光合作用),the more of it the better. So having more CO2in the atmosphere acts like a fertilizer, stimulating plant growth.Because of the size of the Amazon rainforest,it seems that presently it is taking up a large percentage of our CO2pollution in the atmosphere,about75%of the world's car pollution.48.After whom was the Amazon River named?A.The Indian women fighters.B.The head of an Indian tribe.C.The first explorer of the river.D.The women fighters in ancient Greek stories.49.Which of the following statements is true?A.The Amazon basin is the largest in the world.B.The Amazon River causes huge rains every summer.C.The Amazon rainforest supports about20%of the world's plants.D.The Amazon River carries75%of the world's water to the oceans.50.Why is CO2compared to a fertilizer in Para.3?A.They both absorb light.B.They both store heat.C.They both help plants grow.D.They both cause global warming.51.What is implied in the last paragraph?A.The Amazon rainforest may disappear soon.B.The Amazon may take up more CO2in the future.C.The size of the Amazon basin may become smaller.D.People may change the name of the Amazon River.Passage FiveThe AIDA model is the foundation of modern marketing and advertising practice. It outlines the four basic steps that can be used to persuade potential customers to make a purchase. The first three steps lie in creating attention(A),developing interest(I),and building desire(D)for the product, before the fourth step-the"call to action"(A)-tells them exactly how and where to buy.AIDA can channel the customer's feelings througheach stage of the communication process toward reaching a sale.Attracting the customer's attention is the first challenge, and this may be achieved by using an attractive phrase, offering a discount or something for free,or demonstrating how a problem can be solved.Once someone's attention has been seized,it must be turned into real interest. This is best done by providing a brief description of the product's benefits to the consumer, rather than simply listing the product's main features.Problem-solving claims,or results-based advice can be used to create desire, before finally laying out a simple way for that desire to be met-the means to buy.On website advertising, this might be a direct link;on TV or print,it may be a website or telephone number. In the movie industry, the stages of AIDA are used to great effect.Movie studios often begin their marketing campaigns months in advance with giant posters to attract attention to the new movie.Short attractive previews follow, which develop interest by offering an attractive glimpse of the movie without giving too much away.Desire is inspired by the release of the full preview, which is carefully designed to show the exciting moments of the movie, from special effects to humorous lines of dialogue. On the opening weekend, advertisements in newspapers and on television focus on the movie's release, inviting the consumer to go and buy a ticket.52.What is the purpose of creating the AIDA model?A.To promote potential sales.B.To simplify the daily business.C.To describe the types of markets.D.To lay the foundation for advertising53.Which of the following can turn customers'attention into real interest?A.Listing the product's main features.B.Describing the benefits of a product.C.Selling a product at a great discount.D.Offering free samples through a link.54.In which stage of the AIDA model are giant posters used?A.Attention.B.Interest.C.Desire.D.Action.55.What is the writer's tone in introducing the AIDA model?A.Surprised.B.Critical.C.Objective.D.Hopeful.V.Daily In fact, research by Albert Einstein College of Medicine has, so far, suggested that lifestyle changes related to healthy ageing looks “more promising than drug studies〞.For the last decade or so, researchers have been exploring the link between our modern diets and the increasing preval ence of Alzheimer’s, specifically the connection between sugar and disease. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated that even a mild elevation of blood sugar is associated with an elevated risk of dementia.Previous research h ad shown a higher risk for diabetics in developing Alzheimer’s. More recent research has shed further light on this, finding an intricate link between insulin resistance and the brain. Our bodies produce insulin that is necessary for the survival of brain cells, but this process goes awry when a toxic protein, called ADDL, removes receptors from these cells and renders them insulin resistant. As the ADDLs accumulate, our memory can begin to d eteriorate. So, what should we be feeding our bodies to give our brain the best chance A diet low in sugar and carbohydrates and high in healthy fats is essential. Opt for “real〞 food above processed options and try to keep added sugar levels to a minimum (ideally between 15 and 25 grams a day). Add plenty of good fats like avocados, raw nuts and coconut and other nut oils to the diet and try a high-quality probiotic to optimize the flora in the gut.76.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as one of the causes of A lzheimer’sA. Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. Choose the correct answer and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneHow much living space does a person need? What happens when his space requirements are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effect of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, and reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns and even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep or eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even kill each other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is adequate space not only desirable, but also essential for human survival?51. This passage is mainly about ______.A) living space and behaviorB) population and living conditionsC) interesting experiments on ratsD) a natural law for human society52. What is the purpose of the experiments described in the passage?A) To determine how much living space a rat needs.B) To see what happens when rats live in a limited space.C) To know the likely effects of inadequate living space on human beings.D) To find out the relationship between population and living conditions.53. How would rats behave when their living conditions become too crowded?A) They eat a lot and become friendly to others.B) They sleep little and act quite peacefully.C) They eat little but sleep soundly.D) They become nervous and tend to be war-like.54. The passage suggests that overcrowded conditions ______.A) are directly related with populationB) may cause an increase in violenceC) may lead to high birth rateD) may bring about pollution problemsPassage TwoMany people hope that the whole world will one day speak a common language. Over the Years, people have made up new languages with this aim. At least six hundred languages have been developed in the search for a language which all human beings would be able to speak. The most famous one, Esperanto ( 世界语) , was the idea of Ludwig Zamenhof, a doctor in Warsaw. He published a book about his new language in 1887.To encourage people to learn the Language, he made it as simple as possible. Esperanto has never been accepted as an official world language, but it has been suggested as an auxiliary language. By 1950 it had been taught to one and a half million speakers, and it was spoken in six hundred schools. Today Esperanto is spoken by about eight million people, and more than one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. Thousands of books have been written in Esperanto, including those translated from other languages.Today the need for a new auxiliary language like Esperanto seems less obvious.Throughout this century English has grown more and more important. It has become a second language for many millions of people. The fact that more are learning English shows that the use of English is still growing worldwide. No one would deny the usefulness of world language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role.55. Over the years, people have made up new languages in the hope that ______.A) all people will be able to speak a common languageB) people will learn a foreign language betterC) people can understand each other betterD) people will be able to speak several languages56. Zamenhof made the language as simple as possible because ______.A) he wanted people to learn it quicklyB) he hoped more and more people would be willing to learn itC) he wanted everyone to speak it without any difficultyD) he hoped it would be accepted as an official world language57. Which of the following is NOT true of English?A) It is widely taught in schools.B) It has become a second language for many millions of people.C) Many books have been written in English.D) It is less popular than Esperanto.58. What is the best title of the passage?A) The language made by one man.B) A talk about the world language.C) English as a second language for everyone.D) Esperanto—a better language than English.Passage ThreeAfter the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had news to report: The damage and death toll could have been much worse. More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25 ,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a. m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city ’ s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake - resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake - resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.59. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low was that ______.A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways60. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ______.A) counterbalance an earthquake’s action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake’ s vi brations61. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on ______.A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes62. The main purpose of this passage is mostly to______.A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U. S.B) encourage civil engineers to make extensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake - resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake - resistant buildingSection BDirections; Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer with a single line through the centre.Part IV Translation Section ADirections: Put the following sentences into Chinese. In choosing a transportation modefor a particular products, shippers consider as many as six criteria: speed, frequency, dependability, capability, availability, and cost. Thus, if a shipper seeks speed, air and truck are the prime contenders. If the goal is low cost, then water and pipeline are the prime contenders. Shippers are increasingly combining two or more transportation modes, thanks to containerization. Containerization consists of putting the goods in boxes or trailers that are easy to transfer between two transportation modes. Each coordinated mode of transportation offers specific advantages to the shipper. For example, piggyback is cheaper than trucking alone and yet provides flexibility and convenience. (15分)标准答案:为了给某种产品选定一种运输方式,货主要考虑六个问题:速度、频率、可靠性、能力便利性和成本。
