专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷112 (总分:50.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、{{B}}Part III Reading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.{{/B}}(总题数:5,分数:50.00) Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grand-parents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and, above all, the insects. I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self-discipline but hard training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.(分数:10.00) (1).The first paragraph tells us that the author______.(分数:2.00) A.was born to a naturalist's family B.lost his hearing when he was a child C.didn't like his brothers and sisters D.was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood √ 解析:解析:从文章第一段第二句“Although we were all brought up in the same way,my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects.”可推知作者的兄弟姐妹不久就放弃了这种爱好,而作者却没有。因此选D。 (2).The author can't remember his relatives clearly because______.(分数:2.00) A.he didn't live very long with them B.he was fully occupied with observing nature √ C.he was too young when he lived with them D.the family was extremely large 解析:解析:从第二段最后一句“But I do have a crystal—clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and, above all,the insects.”可推断出答案是B。 (3).Which of the following statement is true?(分数:2.00) A.The author believes that a born naturalist cannot be a scientist. B.The author's brothers and sisters were good at music and languages. √ C.The author read a lot of books about the natural world and the oil industry. D.The author spent a lot of time working on riddles. 解析:解析:由第一段倒数第二句“Unlike them,I had no ear for music and languages.”可推断出作者的兄弟姐妹们都很擅长音乐和语言。其他几项都同文意不相符。 (4).The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he______.(分数:2.00) A.lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist √ B.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic C.just reads about other people's observations and discoveries D.comes up with solutions in a most natural way 解析:解析:第四段第一句说到“…one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline,a quality I lack.”因此选A。 (5).According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be______.(分数:2.00) A.full of ambition B.full of enthusiasm √ C.knowledgeable D.self-disciplined 解析:解析:从文章第三段第二句“I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations.”可推知—个天生的自然学家最首要的条件是enthusiasm。故选B。 Sporting activities are essentially modified forms of hunting behavior. Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his prey(猎物) into a goal-mouth. If his aim is accurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter's triumph of killing his prey. To understand how this transformation has taken place, we must briefly look back at our forefathers. They spent over a million years evolving as co-operative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the hunting-field. Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed. They became chasers, runners, jumpers, aimers, throwers and prey-killers. They co-operated as skillful male-group attackers. Then about ten thousand years ago, after this immensely long period of hunting their food, they became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so vital to their old hunting life, was put to a new use—that of controlling and domesticating their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer essential for survival. The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets. Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all the original hunting sequences, but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoid starvation. Instead the sportsmen set off to test their skill against prey that were no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten, but there were other, much simpler ways of obtaining a meaty meal.(分数:10.00) (1).The author believes that sporting activities______.(分数:2.00) A.are forms of biological development B.are essentially forms of taming the prey C.have actually developed from hunting √ D.have changed the way of hunting 解析:解析:由文章第一段第一句“Sporting activities are essentially modified forms of hunting behavior.”可知正确答案是C。 (2).In a football game, what is equal to the prey in hunting is______.(分数:2.00) A.any member of the opposing team B.the goal-mouth √ C.the goal keeper D.the football 解析:解析:由第一段第三句“His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his prey (猎物)into a goal—mouth.”可知B正确。

专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷106(题后含答案及解析) 全部题型 5. Reading ComprehensionPart III Reading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!”The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.1.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably______.A.he is a lazy personB.he refuses to follow his own energy cycleC.he is not sure when his energy is lowD.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening正确答案:D解析:第二段中倒数第二句说到“The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at this temperature—and—energy peak in the evening.”因此正确答案为D。

江西省专升本英语模拟试题
2020年江西省“专升本”英语统一考试模拟试卷一PartⅠListening comprehension(10points)(略)PartⅡReading Comprehension(40points)Directions:In this section there are four passages. Each of them is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A),B),C),and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions16-20are based on the following passage. There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with.Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with,an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is brought up.If an individual is handicapped(不利)environmentally,it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins,Peter and Mark.Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster(抚养)homes.Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence.Mark's I.Q.was125,twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother.Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.16.This selection can best be titled____________.A.Measuring Your IntelligenceB.Intelligence and EnvironmentC.The Case of Peter and MarkD.How the Brain Influences Intelligence17.The best statement of the main idea of this passage is that_______.A.human brains differ considerablyB.the brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligenceC.environment is crucial in determining a person's intelligenceD.persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence18.According to the passage, the average I.Q.is___.A.85.B.100C.110D.12519.The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that_______.A.individuals with identical brains seldom test at the same levelB.an individual's intelligence is determined only by his environmentck of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligenceD.changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain20.This passage suggests that an individual's I.Q.____.A.can be predicted at birthB.stays the same throughout his lifeC.can be increased by educationD.is determined by his childhoodQuestions21-25are based on the following passage.By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder(奎蛇).In Scotland,in fact, there are no other snakes at all.The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite.It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all. Most people regard snake bites as a fatal(致命的)misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal.Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs(外行人)heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery(手术)and other unnecessary measures. All snakes have small teeth,so that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger.British snakes are shy animals and far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened,as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally,or if you try to catch it or pick it up,which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming,it will normally get out of the wa6y as quickly as it can,but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close. The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults.A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison.Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect,as there are of serious illness.21.Adders are most likely to be found_______.A)in wider parts of Britain and Ireland B)in Scotland but nowhere elseC)on wild land through Britain D)in the countryside in England22.If you are with someone who is bitten by an adder, you should______.A)try to catch the snake B)not treat the bite yourselfC)not worry too much about the victim D)operate him as soon as possible23.We are told that adders_______.A)normally friendly towards peopleB)unlikely to bite except in self-defenseC)likely to attack people whenever they see themD)not afraid of human beings24.If an adder hears you approaching,it will usually______.A)move out of your pathB)take no notice of you at allC)disappear very quicklyD)wait until you are close and then attack25.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A)Adders are more likely to attack children than adults.B)The adder prefers to bite a person with a heavy body.C)The danger of adder bites is different from person to person.D)In most cases adder bites are more serious than other illnesses.Questions26-30are based on the following passages.Only the government can ensure that the American people have clean air and pure water. Congress must pass laws to stop manufacturers from polluting the air and water with the waste from their factories.Unless anti-pollution standards are enforced for all, companies that care about a clean environment will go out of business. For example,if Automobile Company X spends money to put an air-pollution control device on their automobiles, their cars will be more expensive than the cars produced by another company.People who don’t have the extra money or who don’t care about pollution will not buy the more expensive cars.Automobile Company X will go bankrupt (破产);that is,it won’t make enough money to pay its workers and to buy materials. It will then go out of business.Of course,no automobile company will make itself go bankrupt on purpose, and the pollution of the land and air and water will go on.But if the government says that all automobile manufacturers must make cars with air-pollution control devices, the cost of all manufacturers will be equal. So the government cannot let companies decide whether or not they want to stop pollution. The government must force manufacturers to clean up the environment by setting anti-pollution standards for everyone.26.If a company cares about a clean environment while others don’t,it will have to_______.A)change the anti-pollution standards for its productsB)sell its products at a more expensive priceC)buy materials at a higher priceD)pay more money to its workers27.The writer gives the example of Automobile Company X to show that_______.A)manufacturers will not take care of pollution control on their own willB)few manufacturers are aware of the importance of air-pollution controlC)air-pollution control devices are more expensive than other devicesD)people like to buy cars that are equipped with pollution control devices28.According to the writer,anti-pollution standards ensure that______.A)no manufacturer will go bankrupt for spending money on pollution controlB)less money will be spent in buying pollution control devicesC)manufacturers know how to control pollution more effectivelyD)all manufacturers have to take measures to control pollution29.The purpose of this passage is_______.A)to describe how a company can go bankruptB)to emphasize the urgent need of cleaning up the environmentC)to stress the importance of the government’s role In preventing pollutionD)to tell how difficult it is to keep the environment free from air-pollution30.What can be inferred from thin passage?A)Companies have not been given an equal chance to develop their business.B)A company will go bankrupt if its cars have to be installed with pollution control devices.C)The US government has not set up standards on pollution control for car producers.D)It is necessary to persuade producers to take effective pollution control measure. Questions31-35are based on the following passages.Large-scale production in a large market brings advantages:mass production helps to reduce the manufacturing costs of consumer goods and the single market also makes it easier to specialize. Together, these two considerations improve businesses’chance of making profit.Within the single market, the Community(欧共体)is making clearly strict European industrial standards which help European industry compete with imported products and conquer new markets,as well as making high-quality products available to the consumer. The European commission’s competition policy serves to ensure that the Almost at once, we notice his appearance, style of dress, and monner of speech. Furthermore, as we listen to what he has to say and observe the things he does, we begin to form some ideas of what kind of person hisand what he intends to do. As you know from your own experience, though, we do not only gather these separate pieces of information. Instead, we go further and combine them into a unified picture. In short, we form an overall im pression of each person we meet-an impression that can be favorable orunfavorable. But how precisely do we perform this task? How do we combine so much different information into a clear first impression with such quick speed? A great deal of research has been performed on this question, and resulits point to the following answer: We perform this task through a special type of averaging.Expressed very simply our impressions of others seem to represent a weighted average of all information that can be gathered about them. That is, they reflect a process in which all information we have about others is averaged to gether—but with some facts, or input receiving greater sense. For example, in forming an impression of a new boss you would probably be influedced to a much greater degree by how this person gives you orders ( whether respectfully or not ) than by the color of his or her eyes. The fact that not all information about other persons affects our impressions of them to the same degree, raises an important question: Just what kinds of input receive the greatest weight? Again research provides some revealing(发⼈深思) an-swers.26. This passage is mainly about_______.A. how our first impressions are expressed.B. how our first impressions are formed.C. how we can favorably impress others.D. how first impression affect our lives.27. According to the passage, the first impression is_______.A. the result of quick look.B. not based on enough information.C. a combination of pieces of information.D. the observation of what a person does.28. It can also bring long-lasting rewards, especially for people working with Western businesses. The main activity of debate is presenting one' s opinion and suppmting it with evidence, such as statistics or facts. It is a way of persuasive communication.Charles Lebeau helped create the "Discover Debate" method. He says debate is important to understanding how people communicate in Western business. Successful debaters learn how to give their opinkm, reasans and support. "What we are trying to do is to develop a kind of thinking or approach to discussion and how to interact (交流) with someone else' s opinion, rather than brush their opinion aside. "Debate skills are also important in selling a product, he says. In that situation, the judges are the customem. "So on Monday, for example, one company may come in and present their case to the customer and they" ll make as strong a ease as they can. On Tuesday, the next day, another company will come in and present their ease to the customer. Usually the party that can present the strongest case wins”Debate also strengthens critical thinking. In other words, it helps students learn to ask questionsand try to understand someone' s reasons and evidence.lift-. Lebeau points out that successful debaters learn to listen carefully to what other people are saying. Then, they look for the weak points in someone else' s opinion or argument. He says debate teaches a systematic way of questioning.Successful debaters also learn to think from someone else' s point of view. Mr. Lebeau says debate can help broaden the mind. "There' s an expression in English : don' t criticize another person before you have walked in their shoes. I think the wonderful thing about debate is, it puts us in another person' s shoes. 。

专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷123(总分50, 做题时间90分钟)Part III Reading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there arefour passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. It seems clear that literature has become more and more a female activity. In bookstores, at conferences or public readings by writers, and even in university departments dedicated to the humanities, the women clearly outnumber the men. The explanation traditionally given is that middle-class women read more because they work fewer hours than men, and so many of them feel that they can justify more easily than men the time that they devote to fantasy and illusion. I am somewhat allergic to explanations that divide men and women into frozen categories and attribute to each sex its characteristic virtues and **ings; but there is no doubt that there are fewer and fewer readers of literature, and that among the saving remnant (剩余) of readers women predominate. This is the case almost everywhere. In Spain, for example, a recent survey organized by the General Society of Spanish Writers revealed that half of that country's population has never read a book. The survey also revealed that in the minority that does read, the number of women who admitted to reading surpasses the number of men by 6. 2 percent, a difference that appears to be increasing. I am happy for these women, but I feel sorry for these men, and for the millions of human beings who could read but have decided not to read. They earn my pity not only because they are unaware of the pleasure that they are missing, but also because I am convinced that a society without literature, or a society in which literature has been relegated—like some hidden vice—to the margins of social and personal life, is a society condemned to become spiritually barbaric, and even to jeopardize (破坏) its freedom. I wish to offer a few arguments against the idea of literature as a luxury pastime, and in favor of viewing it as one of the most primary and necessary undertakings of the mind, an irreplaceable activity for the formation of citizens in a modern and democratic society, a society of free individuals.SSS_SINGLE_SEL1.According to the passage, which 01 the following statement is true?A Women read less than men.B Reading becomes more and more female-centered.C Most literature aims at women.D Women's characteristics lead to their hobby of reading.SSS_SINGLE_SEL2.The author considers traditional explanation______.A logicalB not convincingC not interestingD totally trueSSS_SINGLE_SEL3.The author cites the example of Spain in order to______.A explain the reasons why literature is more a female activityB show women always devote the time to fantasy and illusionC illustrate the phenomenon that literature is more a female activity existing in nearly every countryD show how illiterate the Spanish people areSSS_SINGLE_SEL4.What's the author's attitude towards the people who don't read?A Pitiful.B Angry.C Agreeable.D Allergic.SSS_SINGLE_SEL5.It can be inferred from Para. 3 that ______.A a society which lacks literature is an ideal societyB if a society lacks literature, the freedom cannot be guaranteedC literature is a luxury pastimeD literature is not a necessity in a democratic societySome pessimistic experts feel that the automobile is bound to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all autos will be abandoned and allowed to rust. Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable future. The motorcar will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more economical, andshould not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types. Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic congestion. One proposed solution to this problem is the automated highway system. When the auto enters the highway system, a retractable (可伸缩的) arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically. Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a **puter. **puter will then monitor all of the car's movements. The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. **puter will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer that will warn him of **ing exit. It is estimated that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.SSS_SINGLE_SEL6.One significant improvement in the future car will probably be______.A its power sourceB its driving systemC its monitoring systemD its seating capacitySSS_SINGLE_SEL7.What is the author's main concern?A How to render automobiles pollution free.B How to make smaller and safer automobiles.C How to solve the problem of traffic jams.D How to develop an automated subway system.SSS_SINGLE_SEL8.What provides autos with electric power in an automated highway system?A A rail.B An engine.C A retractable arm.D A computer controller.9.In an automated highway system, all the driver needs to do isto______.A keep in the right laneB wait to arrive at his destinationC keep in constant touch with **puter centerD inform the system of his destination by phoneSSS_SINGLE_SEL10.What is the author's attitude toward the future of autos?A Enthusiastic.B Pessimistic.C Optimistic.D Cautious.Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them. Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it. People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100, 000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is brutal (残酷的), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation between hunters and hunt saboteurs(阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox's smell, which the dogs follow. Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat totheir sport. A Labor Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law, which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.11.Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes______.A for recreationB in the interests of the farmersC to limit the fox populationD to show of their wealthSSS_SINGLE_SEL12.What is special about fox hunting in Britain?A It involves the use of a deadly poison.B It is a costly event that rarely occurs.C The hunters have set rules to follow.D The hunters have to go through strict training.SSS_SINGLE_SEL13.Fox hunting opponents often interfere in the game______.A by resorting to violenceB by confusing the fox huntersC by taking legal actionD by demonstrating on the sceneSSS_SINGLE_SEL14.A new law may be passed by the British Parliament to______.A prohibit farmers from hunting foxesB forbid hunting wild animals with dogsC stop hunting foxes in the countrysideD prevent large-scale fox huntingSSS_SINGLE_SEL15.It can be inferred from the passage that______.A killing foxes with poison is illegalB limiting the fox population is unnecessaryC hunting foxes with dogs is considered cruel and violentD fox-hunting often leads to confrontation between the poor and the richVenice is such a strange city. It is built on an Italian lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has canals instead of roads, which means thereare no cars or buses, no trams or trains or bicycles running past us. Best of all, you could walk or jump or play hide-and-seek on its cobbled streets or its countless bridges whenever you choose to. Daily life in Venice skims over its waterways, especially the sweeping double curve of the Grand Canal and the 180 smaller water passages that run through the 118 islands that make up the city. For generations, tiny boatyards have built these lopsided boats, with one side curving further outwards than the other. Why? To balance the weight of the oarsman at the end of the boat. This Italian city is known for its festivals, especially the popular ten-day Carnival in April. Children, teenagers and adults dress in special costumes, unusual stockings and shoes, then do masks before they take part in this celebration. It's difficult to make out who is behind each mask, but it's easy to make friends during this constant party in the streets. What fun! On other occasions, Venetians celebrate with a regatta or boat race. The city loves the Vogalonga, on the first Sunday of May, best of all. That's when anyone who can row with oars is welcome to join the other boats on the great Grand Canal, especially in fancy dress. Imagine the sight! Venice is an unusual city, but it is facing an unusual threat. It's sinking. Since it's built on a lagoon, the weight of the city on the silt beneath it threatens its life. "Venice today is sinking three times as fast as before, at 300mm per century," explains an environmentalist. We feel sad about the thought that beautiful Venice, with its splendid churches, its collections of art and its happy spirit, may be buried under the sea someday. May the lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice, never face that day.SSS_SINGLE_SEL16.This text mainly talks about______.A the boats of VeniceB a voyage in VeniceC a brief introduction to VeniceD the reason of Venice's sinkingSSS_SINGLE_SEL17.The boats in Venice are designed with one side curving further outwards than the other because______.A the Venetians wanted to make them specialB it will be easier to keep the balanceC it is designed for the oarsman who is over-weighted on theboatD there are 180 smaller water passages that run through the 118 islandsSSS_SINGLE_SEL18.What do we know about festivals in Venice?A The festivals are based on the strange Italian lagoon.B The residents will make masks during the Carnival.C Festivals are held for people to make friends.D People can have a boat race during the Vogalonga in April.SSS_SINGLE_SEL19.According to this text, the sinking of Venice is because of______.A the pollution in the cityB collapse of the silt beneath the cityC the industry of this cityD so many canals thereSSS_SINGLE_SEL20.Where do you think this **es from?A A magazine for travelers.B An advertisement from a travel agency.C A scientific magazine.D A magazine for Venice merchants.Political controversy about the public-land policy of the United States began with the American Revolution. In fact, even before independence from Britain was won, it became clear that resolving the dilemmas surrounding the public domain might prove necessary to preserve the Union itself. At the peace negotiations with Britain, American demanded, and got, a western boundary at the Mississippi River. Thus the new nation secured for its birthright a vast internal empire rich in agricultural and mineral resources. But under their colonial charters, seven states Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia claimed portions of the western wilderness. Virginia's claim was the largest, stretching north and to encompass the later states of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The language of the charters was vague sponsoring Colonel George Roger Clark's 1778 expedition to Vincennes and Kalkaska, which strengthened America' s trans-Appalachian pretensions at the peace table. The six states holding no claim to the transmittance region doubted whether aconfederacy in which territory was so unevenly apportioned wouldtruly prove what it claimed to be, a union of equals. Already New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island, and Maryland were among the smallest and least populous of the states. While they levied heavy taxes to repay states war debts, their larger neighbors might retire debts out of land sale proceeds. Drawn by fresh lands and low taxes, people would desert the small states for the large, leaving the former to fall into bankruptcy and eventually into political subjugation. All the states shared in the war effort, said the New Jersey legislature; how then could half of them "be left to sink under an enormous debt, while others are enabled, in a short period, to replace all their expenditure from the hard earnings of the whole confederacy?" As the revolution was a common endeavor, so ought its fruits, including the western lands, to be a common property.SSS_SINGLE_SEL21.With which of the following topics is the passage primarily concerned?A A controversial public-land policy.B How independence from Britain was won.C The land holdings of Massachusetts.D How New Jersey developed its western land.SSS_SINGLE_SEL22.According to the passage, the British granted the new American nation a western boundary at______.A OhioB IllinoisC the Mississippi RiverD the Appalachian MountainsSSS_SINGLE_SEL23.Which states laid claim to the largest land-holdings?A North CarolinaB South Carolina.C Virginia.D Georgia.SSS_SINGLE_SEL24.Why does the author mention Colonel Clark's expedition?A To explain how one state strengthened its land claims.B To criticize an effort to acquire additional agricultural resources.C To show that many explorers searched for new land.D To question the validity of Virginia's claims.SSS_SINGLE_SEL25.According to the passage, the smaller states tried to raise money to pay their war debts by______.A collecting taxesB exporting cropsC selling landD raising cattle1。

Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are 12 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneThis is not the world we know. This world is controlled by computers. Men and women can be seen, but they are following orders given to them by machines. The machines were designed by mad scientists, but at some point even the mad scientists were taken over by their super-inventions.Does this sound familiar? You have probably read something like it in magazines or books, or seen it in a film. Why is it so popular? One of the reasons is that it reflects the fears of many people; fear of the unknown, fear of what is not understood or, at least, fear of something that is not completely understood. The fact is that every day it seems that computers take control of another area of our lives. Some factory jobs are now done by robots and the robots are controlled by computers. Our bank accounts are managed by computers. At the airport, our tickets are sold by a computer. Certainly, many of these operations are made more efficient by computers, but our admiration is sometimes mixed with unsafe feelings. And this lack of safety is caused by the fact that we do not know how computers do these things, and we really don’t know what they might do next. But we can find out how computers work, and once we understand them, we can use computers instead of worrying about being used by them. Today, there is a new generation of computer wizards (奇才) who know exactly how computers get things done. These young men and women, usually university students, are happy to sit for hours, sometimes for days, designing programs, not eating, not sleeping, but discovering what can be done by these wonderful slaves which they have learned to control. These computer wizards have learned to use the computer and search for new tasks for their machines.161. We can know that the scientists who designed the machines _____________.A. are careless in their daily lifeB. are unkind and cruelC. are out of their mindD. have great abilities162. The reason why many people are afraid of computers is that ____________.A. they don't know anything about computersB. they haven't really understood computersC. there are so many computer gamesD. computers are often down163. The author mentions computer wizards in order to point out that ____________.A. computers can be controlled by manB. there should be more people devoted to computersC. only young people are interested in computersD. more time and energy is required to control computers164. This passage is probably written to suggest that ____________.A. some day computers can deal with all human problemsB. computers can be used in place of traveling to our jobsC. people should not fear computersD. computer technology will not meet people’s needs in various situations165. The author's attitude (态度) towards widely used computers is_________.A. positiveB. anxiousC. worriedD. curiousPassage TwoKnowledge is power. But there is another thing we must remember. An intelligent mind needs a strong body to make it most useful. There are a great many good exercises for building up our bodies. Many of them may be done indoors in rainy weather. Indoor exercises, however, are never as helpful as those taken out of doors because in the open air there is more oxygen. The air in the house is not fresh. But out of doors it is very fresh, especially in the morning. But what shall we play? There are a number of games such as football, basketball, races and so on. Any game with plenty of exercises is good.Do not neglect your health. It is of as much importance as your mind. Our country now needs people with creative minds, good judgment, and healthy bodies.166. One who has an intelligent mind is ______ .A. very strongB. very healthyC. very cleverD. very stupid167. “An intelligent mind needs a strong body to make it useful.” means ______ .A. if you want to make your strong body useful, you must have an intelligent mindB. in order to make your intelligent mind useful, you must have a strong bodyC. to make your strong mind and strong body most useful you need a strong bodyD. if you have a strong body you will have a strong mind168. Which of the following statements is true?A. Indoor exercises are as helpful as outdoor ones.B. Indoor exercises are no more helpful than outdoor exercises.C. Neither indoor exercises nor outdoor exercises are helpful.D. Outdoor exercises are more helpful than indoor ones.169. The air in the house does not remain fresh very long. It’s because ______.A. the fresh air can’t come into the houseB. there is only a little fresh air coming in and a little waste going outC. the air in the house can’t move at allD. the house gives off wastes170. Our country now ______ with creative minds, good judgment and healthy bodies.A. needs men and womenB. only needs menC. only needs scientistsD. does not need women but menPassage ThreeSurvival is an art. Survivors are artists. The best acting is done in daily life, not on the stage. My late uncle Sir Alexander Korda, the motion-picture producer who could “charm money out of an empty safe”, was a gifted survivor.Once, a group of investors called him in to complain that he had lost 5 000 000 of their money. Most men would have tried to defend themselves. Alex did not. “You are right,” he said quietly, “I have been wasteful, and careless.I have chosen the wrong scripts, paid too little attention to the budgets. I am too old for this business. I will retire.I only hope you will forgive me.”。
