1. Paragraph2 _______ 2. Paragraph3 _______ 3. Paragraph4 _______ 4. Paragraph5 _______
A. Harm Screening May Do to a Younger Woman B. Investigating (调查)the Effect of Screening C. Effects Predicted by Two Diffenducing Cancers from Radiation E. Treatment of Cancers F. Factors That Trigger Cancers
Screen Test
1.Every year millions of women are screened with Xrays to pick up signs of breast cancer. If this happens early enough, the disease can often be treated successfully. According to a survey (调查) published last year, 21 countries have screening programmes. Nine of them, including Australia, Canada, the US and Spain, screen women under 50.
6. But they point out that the risk of women contracting cancer from radiation could be reduced by between 40 and 80 percent if screening began at 50 instead of 45, because they would be exposed to less radiation. The results of their study, they suggest, could help “optimize the technique” for breast cancer screening.
2.But the medical benefits of screening these younger women are controversial(有争议的), partly because the radiation(辐射) brings a small risk of inducing cancer. Also, younger women must be given higher doses of X-rays because their breast tissue (组织) is denser.
4. The mathematical model recommended by Britain’s National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) predicted that the screening programme would cause 36 cancers per 100,000 women, 18 of them fatal. The model preferred by the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation led to a lower figure of 20 cancers.
5.Early discovery of breast cancer may_______.
6.Advantages of screening women under 50 are ______.
7.Delaying the age at which screening starts may ______.
3. Researchers at the Polytechnic University of Valencia analysed the effect of screening more than 160,000 women at 11 local clinics. After estimating the women’s cumulative dose of radiation, they used two models to calculate the number of extra cancers this would cause.
8.Radiation exposure should be _____.
A. be costly
B. harmful
C. save a life D. still open to debate(争论)
E. reduce the risk of radiation triggering a cancer
F. reduced to the minimum
5. The researchers argue that the level of radiation-induced cancers is “not very significant” compared to the far larger number of cancers that are discovered and treated. The Valencia programme, they say, detects between 300 and 450 cases of breast cancer in every 100,000 women screened.

The son of a puter scientist and a pianist, Spielberg spent his early childhood in New Jersey and, later, Arizona. From the very beginning, his fertile imagination filled his young mind with images that would later inspire his filmmaking.(2) Even decades later, Spielberg says he has clear memories of his earliest years, which are the origins of some of his biggest hits. "Steven would start ing his ghost stories," says Richard Y. Hoffman Jr.,leader of Troop 294, "and everyone would suddenly get quiet so that they couldall hear it."(4) Spielberg moved to California with his father and went to high school there, but his grades were so bad that he barely graduated. Both UCLA and USC film schoolsrejected him, so he entered California State University at Long Beach because it was close to Hollywood.Spielberg was determined to make movies, and he managed to get an unpaid, non-credit internship (实习) in Hollywood. Soon he was given a contract, and he dropped out of college. He never looked back.(5) Now, many years later, Spielberg is still ingstories with as much passion as the kid in the tent. Askhim where he gets his ideas, Spielberg shrugs. "The process for me is mostly intuitive(凭直觉的 ) ," he says. "Thereare films that I feel I need to make, for a variety of reasons, for personal reasons, for reasons that I want to have fun, that the subject matter is cool, that I think my kids will like it. How We Form First lmpression We all have first impression Of someone we just met. But why? Why do we form an opinion about Someone without really knowing anything about him or her -aside perhaps from a few remarks or readily observable traits. The answer is related to how your brain allows you to be aware of the world. Your brain is so sensitive in picking up facial traits, even very minor difference in how a person's eyes, ears, nose,or mouth are placed in relation to each other makes you see him or her as differene1.In fact, your brain continuously process incoming sensory information- the sights and sounds of your world. These incoming "signals" are compared against2 a host of "memories" stored in the brain areas called the cortex system to determine what these new signals " mean" .If you see someone you know and like at school3,your brain says "familiar and safe. " If you see someone new,it says,"new-potentially,threatening". Then your brain starts to match features of this stranger with other " known" memories. The height ,weight, dress ,ethnicity ,gestures ,and tone of voice are all matched up. The more unfamiliar the characteristics ,the more your brain may say,This is new. I don't like this person". Or else,"I'm intrigued" . Or yourbrain may perceive a new face but familiar clothes,ethnicity,gestures-like your other friends;so your brain says: "I like this person" . But these preliminary "impressions" can be deadwrong4When we stereotype people,we use a less mature form of thinking (not unlike the immature thinking of a very young child) that makes simplistic and categorical impressions of others. Rather than learn about the depth and breadth of people-their history, interest, values, strengths, and true character - we categorize them as jocks, geeks,or freaks. However,if we resist initial stereotypical impressions,we have a chance to be aware of what a person is truly like. If we spend time with a person, hear about his or her life, hopes, dreams, and become aware of the person's character,we use a different, more mature style of thinking- and the most complex areas of our cortex, which allow us to be humane. 反常的人intrigue /in'tri:g/ v. 1. Your brain,is so sensitive in picking up facial traits, even very minor difference in how a person's eyes ,ears ,nose ,or mouth are placed in relation to each other makes you see him or her as different. 从even 开始到as different 是个结果状语从句,相当于that even very minor ...

Teaching Is “One of the Least Popular Jobs in the UK”1) The UK government has just published a report on the future of secondary-school teaching (pupils aged 11~16), and the conclusion of the report is that many secondary schools now face great difficulties in finding people who want to be teachers. Since the 1980s, the number of graduates who say they would “se riously consider” teaching as a career has fallen sharply, from 64% in 1982 to just 17% today. The report suggests that urgent action needs to be taken in order to encourage more intelligent young graduates into teaching.2) The main drawback of secondary teaching, according to the report, is the low salary. Earnings in teaching are much lower than in many other jobs, and this means that fewer and fewer young people decide to be teachers. Joanne Manners, 24 is a good example. “ I graduated in maths last year, and I was thinking of doing a teacher training course to become a maths teacher—but when I looked into the details, it became clear that teaching isn’t a very lucrative(赚钱的)job these days. I saw I could earn twice as much if I worked in marketing or advertising, and so I decided not to become a teacher.”3) It’s not just about the money, however. The survey concluded that another reason why people don’t want to be teachers is that some teenagers behave very badly in school. A lot of schools have problems with discipline, and it seems clear thatchildren do not have the same respect for teachers as in the past. Here’s the view of Dave Hallam, an accountant from London:” I think parents are to blame. They should have stricter rules with their children at home and also teach their children to have more respect for teachers.”4) “ It makes me feel so proud.” Says Brian Jones, who works in a secondary school in London. So what does he think the government should do to encourage more people to become teachers?” “My view is that the government should reduce the burden of work on teachers. I find that I always have too much work to do.”5) The report is clear that the problem of teacher shortage is a very serious one. It says that the government should raise teachers’pay significantly, to catch up with workers in other professions. It also suggests that the government could launch a nationwide publicity campaign, with some advertisements on TV and in the newspapers, to show the positive sides of teaching to young people. Another solution could be set a maximum number of hours per week that teachers can work, in order to reduce stress on teachers. “Hopefully,” the report concludes, “these solutions can improve the poor image of secondary teaching, and increase the number of young people who want to become teachers in the future.【题干】23.

Architecture1 Architecture is to building as literature is to the printed word. The best buildings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They then survive not only as beautiful objects, but as documents of the history of cultures. These achievements are never wholly the work of individuals. Architecture is a social art.2 The renaissance brought about an entirely new age, not only in philosophy and literature but in the visual arts as well. In architecture, the principles and styles of ancient Greece and Rome were brought back to life and reinterpreted. They remain dominant until the 20th century.3 Many kinds of stone are used as building materials. Stone and marble were chosen for important monuments because they are not burnable and can be expected to endure. Stone architecture was often blended with stone sculpture. The use of stone has declined, however, because a number of other materials are more adaptable to industrial use.4 The complexity of modern life calls for a variety of building. More people live in mass housing and go to work in large office buildings; they spend their income in large shopping centers, send their children to manydifferent kinds of schools, and when they are sick they go to specialized hospitals and clinics. All theses different types of buildings accumulated experiences needed by their designers.5 By the middle of the 20th century, modern architecture, which was influenced by new technology and mass production, was dealing with increasingly complex social needs. Important characteristics of modern architectural works are expanses of glass and the use of reinforced concrete. Advances in elevator technology, air conditioning, and electric lighting have all had important effects. The renaissance brought about an entirely new age, not only in philosophy and literature but in the visual arts as well.
