His novel , U. S. A. Trilogy , which is John Dos Passos’s masterpiece, mirrors the dark side of America and revals the essence of the society, marking a higher level of John Dos Passos’s artistic achievements. This thesis tends to explore the themes of U. S. A. Trilogy from three chapters. Chapter one deliberates the theme—the pursuit of money, which is mainly formed by Charley’s pursuit of money and Moorehouse’s pursuit of money. Chapter two elaborates the theme—the protest against the society from two angles—Savage’s p rotest and Mary’s protest.Chapter three investigates the theme—the compromise on the destiny including Charley’s compromise on career and spirit and Margo’s compromise on dream and life.In conclusion, in U. S. A. Trilogy, employing the unique narrative art, John Dos Passos creates insightful themes—the pursuit of money, the protest against the society and the compromise on the destiny. Themes reflect the distorted effects of capitalism on the American people, which is of great realistic significance in modern society. Consequently, U. S. A. Trilogy enlightens that people should be brave, hard-working and hopeful so as to fabricate a more harmonious society.Key Words: John Dos Passos money protest compromise摘要约翰•多斯•帕索斯,是一位美国杰出的的文学家。

介绍欧亨利的英语作文60字

介绍欧亨利的英语作文1英文作文:Oh, let me tell you about O. Henry. This remarkable writer had a life full of twists and turns. He was born in a small town, and from an early age, he showed a great love for words and stories. But life wasn't always easy for him. He faced many hardships and struggles. At one point, he found himself in poverty, yet he never gave up on his passion for writing.Even when times were tough, he would sit in a small corner of a coffee shop or in a dimly lit attic, scribbling away on scraps of paper. His determination was unwavering. One of his most famous works is "The Gift of the Magi." In this story, we see the beauty of true love and selflessness. A young couple, deeply in love but very poor, sacrifice their most precious possessions to buy gifts for each other. It's a story that warms the heart and makes us believe in the goodness of humanity.O. Henry's writing style is unique. He has a way of surprising the reader with unexpected twists and turns. His stories are like little gems that sparkle with wit and wisdom. He may have had a difficult life, but through his words, he created a world full of hope and love. His stories continue to inspire generations of readers, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of light.中文翻译:哦,让我来给你讲讲欧·亨利。

The American Society

The American Society

"money is everything"
Pudd'nhead Wilson(1894)
A society that divides people into different classes merely because of races and complexion is definitely a silly one, because such a society does not make sense. In the book, there are two kids:one is white and one is black. The white kid grows up with Black people and he behaves in a way exactly black people do, no exception. His white complexion hence proves to be useless.

What actions show us that “my father "was educated under Chinese culture?
1)… as time went on and the business continued to thrive, my father started to talk about his grandfather and the village he had reigned over in China—things my father had never talked about when he worked for other people. (P101,para2) 2)…For in my father’s mind, a family owed its head a degree of loyalty that left no room for dissent. To embrace what he embraced was to love; and to embrace something else was to betray him.(P103,para6) 3) He demanded a similar sort of loyalty of his workers, whom he treated more like servants than employees. (P103,para7) 4) “Did you eat today?” he asked in Mandarin. (P106,para4) 5) “I like to talking to the judge,” said my father.(P110,para4)
In addition, many of her writings reflect her childhood experiences growing up in Scarsdale, NY. The common themes the writer employs include stories of immigration, assimilation, and occasional tensions with other ethnic communities. The American dream is also an important aspect to her work. "I can say that the American dream is much more complicated than you would think. I think I'm just trying to capture some of that complexity."
Her experiences
Gish Jen is a second generation Chinese American. Her parents emigrated from China in the 1940s, her mother from Shanghai and her father from Yixing. She grew up in Queens, NY, then Yonkers, then Scarsdale. She graduated from Harvard University in 1977 with a BA in English, and later attended Stanford Business School, but dropped out in favor of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, where she earned her MFA in fiction in 1983.
"In the American Society" is about the Chang family, with the father Ralph as focal point. The story is divided into two sections: 'His Own Society' and 'In the American Society' and, taken together, both sections illustrate Ralph Chang's transformation from old country Chinese-American to new country Chinese-American on his own terms.
