The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.
David Tilman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how a diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized (工业化), population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet. The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating theses foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tilman says overweight people are at greater risk of noninfectious diseases like diabetes (糖尿病) and heart disease. Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on. And, a diet bad for human beings is also bad for the environment. As the world's population grows, more forests and tropical (热带的) areas will become farmlands for crops or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now. Mr Tilman calls the link between the diet, the environment and human health, “a trilemma”—a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.
1.We can infer from the passage that ________. A.Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes cases B.overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseases C.the examined information comes from developing countries D.industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet 答案:D 推理判断题。 2.According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future from ________. A.transportation B.developing countries C.agriculture D.developed countries 答案:C 细节理解题。 3.David Tilman believes that ________. A.the diet, the environment and human health are closely connected B.the Western diet is the only choice as the nation industrializes C.people in tropical areas are more likely to have heart disease

Section Ⅰ Warming Up & Reading—ComprehendingⅠ阅读理解AAfter my son T.J. was diagnosed with autism(自闭症) at age 2,we went through all the emotions. Our motto in those early yearswas “Throw everything at him and let’s see what happens.” We gavehim every possible learning opportunity. If one thing wasn’t working,we tried something else. We wanted to see what worked best for T.J.and what would make him the most successful. When T.J. started school, we aimed for the stars. For my husband and me, that meant trying to get him to college. I grew up with that mind-set. But I’m learning now that it’s not the best path for everyone. At age 17, T.J. got stressed out easily in a variety of situations and, with some assistance, could calm himself down. This past winter, as we watched friends with children of T.J.’s age plan college tours, we quietly let go of that definition of success. We started considering what is the best thing for him. Along the way, we have talked with T.J. about what he wants his future to look like. Now we are trying to find the best way to honor his ideas while overcoming some challenges to help him keep growing. His special educator is on_board_with this plan and is suggesting options for his future. We visited a great residential(提供住宿的) program over spring break, which allows kids to live together, with 24-hour care, and provides opportunities to take a college-level course. We worked with T.J. to structure this program to meet his needs. We are actively planning his actual future, with him involved every step of the way. It doesn’t look like the college tours a typical high school junior takes, but we are happy with what it is: opportunity and challenge for him and us! We will find our way, together.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

AKieron Graham has known from a young age that he was adopted. While he loves his adoptive family, he has always wondered about his birth mother and brother. When his adoptive mom gave him a DNA test tool, they both hoped it might help him find his birth family. But neither of them guessed it would work so quickly. And when it did, Graham learned he and his longlost brother should have crossed paths every day.It took just one week from the time Graham, a college student at Georgia’s Kennesaw State University, received his DNA results on for him to connect with his brother. Graham’s DNA results showed that his closest match was a man named Vincent Ghant, and it turned out that Ghant lived just a few minutes away.Graham reached out and learned that the two were in fact longlost brothers. Their mother, Shawn Ghant, made the diffcult decision to place Kieron in adoptive care when he was just a baby. And she has worried and wondered about her youngest son ever since. Graham has since been reunited with his mother and both of his brothers on his mother’s side.“It’s all surreal(离奇的). Too many words are needed to describe exactly what I’m feeling about the entire situation, but it’s a good situation,” Graham tells MNN.As fate would have it, Kieron and Vincent are both students at Kennesaw State University. They even have the same major—Political Science. So it’s a safe bet the two have crossed paths many times over the past three years. And now, thanks to some DNA sleuthing(侦查), the two will cross paths many more times in the years to come.“We’re getting together on Christmas with everyone, birth mother included,”Graham says. “That’s sure to be a very indelible Christmas indeed, which will always be remembered by us.”【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了Graham在一家网站的帮助下,找到了自己的哥哥及亲生母亲的故事。
