Written in 1839, the early work “When you are old”, is a small verse dedicated to the woman Yeats beloved. In 1889, the 24-year-old Yeats encountered a beautiful actress called Maud Gonne. He fell in deep love with her soon, and for the whole life. Unfortunately, she refused his proposal due to Yeats' meek and quiet characteristics as well as her unshakable pursuit for national movement.Dramatically, her refusal had produced a great poet: though Yeats' lovelorn had brought him ultimate distress, it had provided profound sentiments and mental resources for his poetry creation, which had transformed into many poems complicated in sentiments, profound in minds, and gracefulness in forms. This poem is divided into three sections, 12 lines totally. Though short, in truth, each word is read sincerely.It starts with a lovely and warm picture of an old lady: when you are old, my lady, and your hair have turned grey, you will be nodding by the fire, full of sleep. If you take out this poem and read it slowly and carefully, you will again see your soft and mild eyes you had when you were young. The sorrow and depth of your eyes will appear in your dream once again. The speaker imagines one day, when his beloved young lady is old, she will be reading this poem and feel the youth of herself again.The second stanza is a contrast between other admirers and the speaker: how many of your admirers love you are only because of your beauty and youth when you are graceful and elegant? Nevertheless, there is only one man who loves your noble soul and your aging face. The speak er refers to himself when he says: “one man”. The author exemplified the love she received from her past relationships by the contrast: Contrast between an attractive young girl and an old lady; Contrast between other people’s love and his; Contrast between reality and imagination.The picture describes seems to be old and clumsy, meanwhile, the picture is warm and fragrant. He described her soul as a “pilgrim”---- A person with a “pilgrim soul” must be set free to wander in life. Compared with the love of others, the author’s love is more sincere and loyal.The last stanza seems to be irrelevant to the previous stanzas, but it is the elevation of his affection: the old lady will bend down beside the stove and murmur sadly about the God of Love fleeing away. He goes up a mountain overhead and hides his face among a crowd of stars. This is only the literal meaning of the third stanza and the implied meaning is seeing the God of Love flee away may make you a little sad, but in fact, the God just hides himself in the sky. We may not be able to get married in the human world, but our soul can unite when we are in heaven. The third section comes back to the first stanza, creating an illusion of following time for readers that the past, present and future all collide. Although it is a pity that he and shecannot get married in the human world because the God of Love had left, they are still able to be together when they die. True love is not about physical love, but about spiritual love, like Plato’s love.This poem is unique on expressing feelings. Traditional English poem about love usually express feelings directly and strongly, or concentrate on a woman's beauty, running out of the beautiful words to praise the lover in the heart. And the style is also trend to be cheerful and permeated with the youth enthusiasm. However, Yeats, uncharacteristically, uses simple language to express his emotion. Never mind all these fancy phrases, just imagines many years later, when the woman read this poem by chance, she could realize that he is the one who would love her forever. Love is an eternal theme. Words cannot express the deep love and extraordinary emotion that conveyed in the poem.The whole poem uses the second person, you, to reveal writer’s innermost feelings. From the perspective of you, poet recalls the past sweetly, which is different to that he gives vent to the passionate love in the first person, making readers sympathize with the same way. The poet uses symbolization to express emotion. In the poem, “fire” symb olized warm; “mountain” symbolized tough, sublimation; “stars” symbolized forever.
